54 bucks? That seems high.I just got back from Co-Op, and for around 60 I got a bottle of the whiskey and two 6 packs of beer.

[QUOTE=username;3780042][QUOTE=Daradon;3779443]I have to say, I'm a little disappointed with what I've been reading and hearing about the Stampede this year. They were building up the centennial so much and I don't see a lot of differences or extras. Besides two old people concerts in Garth Brooks and Beach Boys, where's all the added goodies? Where's the big names and big events?
Quote:

Funny you should say that. I know someone who works there in the marketing dept and they were complaining because their mandate was to push the whole 100 year celebration deal however they had nothing to use to build it up.
Heh yeah, don't get me wrong. I love the Stampede and I think it's very important for the city. I'm just really disappointed with the whole 100 year anniversary plans. It's really no different than the usual years.

For me it's always more about the city and people. I like the added bustle, I like the party goers and even the tourists. I like the added street performers and the general vibe downtown. I like the business parties and casual work days. I like the flapjack breakfasts and the BBQ lunches. I like that you have many excuses to be drunk by noon, hah! I haven't been to the actual grounds in 4 years or so, though I think I'll check them out again this year.

To me this is exactly what's fantastic about this year... they're not trying to change it. They've amped it up a touch (more fireworks, garth brooks etc) but at it's core it's still very much Stampede... warts & all.

I get that, I guess I was just expecting more. As I mentioned earlier, I was hoping some of the renos on the grounds would be done at the least.

However often the best things, (or at least the things that interest me most) have nothing to do with the actual Stampede board, they are just some of the events that come in for other businesses and bars. I have heard a rumour of a Deadmau5 concert. Got my fingers crossed for that.

If they were smart they would have found a way to rope off a huge section of parking lot on the north side of the grounds and had the Garth show there, outside. Probably could pack 50,000 + depending how big they make it. Now that'd be a huge mega event. I don't like the actual Stampede Midway itself, as its very redundant year in and out, but I always like it when a city is buzzing. I always loved it when the Casino was still on the grounds in the Big Four, the atmosphere in there when its packed was just awesome. I will say I do not like how much more yarf is on the ground around the city. But I suppose it comes with the territory.

Outside show is too weather dependent. How many times does it rain during stampede? Pretty often!

Glad I'm not the only one to notice the abundance of floor pizzas this time of year. We should start a thread to keep track of their locations.

I found some of the Whisky at the Solo Liquor near my house. The owner said she was able to buy 2 cases of it.

Also, the irony of people complaining that the 100th Stampede is "the same old thing" is delicious.

'Irony'? You mean like rain on your wedding day?

Meh, I still really like this time of year in Calgary. Just thought we'd see a little more this year.

Those co-ordinated fireworks seem really cool.

I wish that they one day build more permanent structure like Saloons, Casino's, Restaurants that have that old west feel, like what Deadwood South Dakota has done. Make it a year round tourist destination culminating into the big fair every July.

C'mon, Garth Brooks and extra fireworks don't make this much different than previous years. They missed the mark on this one. For all the centennial hype the committee should have atleast a headliner at the saddledome every night. Garth should have preformed at Mcmahon, and I'm not even a fan.

So I'm thinking of taking in the parade for the first time since I was a kid. I have a co-worker who lives downtown who is going to set some chairs out for us sometime later tonight, so we should have a spot reserved.

Does anyone have any experience getting down there on the train from the NW? Will the Park and Ride lots be full by 7:30 or 8:00? Specifically I'm thinking about Crowfoot, Dalhousie, and Brentwood. If anyone has any tips, I'd love to hear them. I am assuming that driving downtown is just not wise.

I'm speaking in hyperbole of course, but on parade day I just go ahead and assume everything is full everywhere if it's in anyway related to the downtown core that morning.

Ok that wasn't help, but in my past experience the busses going into the core were extra full by 7:00-7:30ish on the morning of the parade, so I can only assume the trains will be the same around that time.

Trains are usually fully packed in the SW starting around 6:30 parade morning. And on a normal work day the lots are almost full by 7-7:30 anyways, so I'd advise to get down early if you want a spot.

I think there are plans to build a "City-Walk" style entertainment district, north of the Saddledome. Imagine cheesy franchise bars like Jimmy Buffet's, Bubba Gump, NASCAR Sports Grill, Rainforest Cafe, Planet Hollywood and Hard Rock Cafe. Yahoo!

Might look like this:

Well eff. I'll have to see if this is going to be worth taking a 10-month old down there for something that he won't remember anyway. I'd be more willing to deal with the hassle next year when he'd be able to run around a bit and get a little more enjoyment from it.
