Great job as usual, centrists!

I'm not saying that defense military spending is the most efficient way to up lift the poor but it is a sad truth that the military is about the best route into the lower middle class for black and Hispanic Americans, it provides vast amounts of free education and healthcare and has always been one of the few places in the US a black kid would be treated reasonably fairly even back in the 50's and 60's.

The concept of the debt ceiling is absurd, and it would be nice if it could go away, but that's not where we're at. I don't know that anyone knows if the 14th amendant could have worked and stood legal challenges, and I don't think it is worth the risk.

Obviously the fringe right are terrible people and the fringe left aren't. The issue I have with the fring left is that they at times hurt their own cause. I don't have issues with most of the things they want. But wanting does not get things done. Working for big, unrealistic change can get in the way of progress.
Yeah, that's bad and something should be done about that. Letting the country go into default is not going to help resolve that.
You were saying that world has been on fire since Reagan was president. I took the implication that it is so bad that it doesn't really matter if the country defaults.

Sounds like your view from the suburbs might not be great.
If you're wealthy and able-bodied enough, yes.

Maybe, but a default isn't going to help anyone.

Weird that the Democrats also had to give concessions when they controlled the House. Also weird that they never force Republicans into concessions.

The Republicans have control now, and they had to agree to something that could get some Democrat support. Isn't that the democrats forcing Republicans into concessions?
Quote:
No, they haven't. They caved to the threat of the freedom caucus, and now millions of Americans will suffer as a result.
Also, imagine thinking "no net new discretionary spending" is a "moderate" position, regardless if it's Democrat or Republican.
|
I don't see it that way. McCarthy ended up ignoring their demands.

The Democrats could have also developed workarounds when they had control of the House. It's not like it wasn't obvious that the GOP were going to run this play if they seized control again.

Because we're past the point where incremental changes are going to have the desired effect. To use a sports analogy, the Democratic Party is constantly kicking the ball away and playing for field position, late in the 4th quarter, when they're down by 10 points.

No, my point was that centrist policies largely resulted in worsening outcomes for poor and working-class Americans. This, combined with the Republicans continuing to move right, the abolishment of the Fairness Doctrine and the establishment of a conservative/neoliberal media hegemony, has led us to where we are today (i.e. on the precipice of a complete Christofascist takeover).

Hope NASCAR makes new fans!
The boycott crowd is soon not gonna have a place to eat, car to drive, beer to drink, or a sport to watch.

I would think that if McCarthy survived this far it's not going to be in trouble after.

It's frightening just how much God, Jesus and the bible are brought up in those responses. It's the favourite crutch of bigotry.

Such an awful religion. So embarrassing to see churches in every neighbourhood in Calgary, too. Can't imagine opting to indoctrinate myself and my children. WTactualF.
Can you imagine if you had to wait until somebody was 18 before you were allowed to indoctrinate them? The church would gone in literally one generation.

Are you suggesting going to old-man virgins with your deepest darkest secrets and handing total authority over your children to them is a bad idea? I'd like to see some evidence to back up such an outrageous claim.
