Sure doesn’t feel that way to me living here in the US. Feels like people are taking it seriously and the tens of millions of people without jobs probably feel that way too.

There might be some other factors at play here too.

There actually hasn't been a positive test on Vancouver Island in 3 weeks. The one they announced a week ago was actually just a Vancouver Island resident who contracted Covid at the Kearl Lake oil sands facility and recovered there before returning home. There's also only 1 active case on the island.

This is partially based on what I have read and partially my speculation.

I think a second wave is possible just not probable in Alberta. Assuming we get to stage 3 sometime in the fall, the government can re-institute stage 2 if necessary and slow down any second wave.

The two key components IMO are, first how well the government 'sells' and makes people understand what is stage 2 and why it is being reintroduced and what would make it become stage 1, total lock-down etc. Secondly, the people (hopefully most) would abide by any new restrictions.

IMO, the virus needs a certain level of infection (critical mass) before it has the ability to turn into a major wave. With a high level of contact tracing, testing, the ability to go back a stage or two, it seems unlikely a major wave will reoccur. Now if the government / health authorities drops the ball somehow (they have been good (but not perfect) so far) and/or the average Joe/Jill ignores the new restrictions then all bets are off. Hopefully, neither of occur in a significant fashion. I am pretty optimistic.

India is grappling with an incident straight out of a movie after several monkeys escaped from a laboratory with COVID-19-tainted blood samples in hand.

The incident happened at a medical college in Meerut, a city in the Uttar Pradesh area of northern India on Tuesday, according to officials.

“Monkeys grabbed and fled with the blood samples of four COVID-19 patients who are undergoing treatment,” Dr. S. K. Garg, a top official at the college, told Reuters. He added that it’s unclear whether the tubes of blood had been spilled.

Garg also urged calm amid fears that the monkeys might spread the coronavirus around Meerut.

“No evidence has been found that monkeys can contract the infection,” he said.

The monkeys attacked a lab technician before they escaped, the Times of India reports. One of the monkeys was seen eating a surgical glove, according to NDTV.

Well that's a weird thing that happened.

Also a record 125 000 new cases yesterday. It may be slowly coming under control in Canada, but there are some pretty major hotspots out there.

And I can imagine that those numbers are a grossly under reported.

I've seen enough Planet of the Apes movies to know it can't end well.

If that holds until July they should open up local festivals out there and welcome musical acts that get tested prior. And televise it.

Would honestly be great to see during this time.

Re-opening of City playgrounds

We will be re-opening playgrounds starting Friday, May 29 instead of June 1. We advanced our timeline so Calgarians can take advantage of the warm weather forecast and because we know how important playgrounds are to Calgary’s children.

Re-opening timelines

It will take approximately 4 business days to re-open all City-operated playgrounds. Re-opening playgrounds involves:

Removing closure tape
Conducting a light safety inspection
Swapping out closed/open signage
We will be starting with Regional Park playgrounds (eg. Bowness Park, Riley Park, Stanley Park), followed by community parks (eg. Playgrounds on a residential street). We expect to complete the re-opening by Wednesday, June 3.

Here are today's new #COVID19AB numbers

-1 new death (but total remains at 143 as one previous death was ruled unrelated)
-13 new cases (total now 6,992)
-3,768 tests completed (~0.3% positive rate)
-53 currently in hospital, 5 in ICU (yesterday: 55 in hospital, 4 in ICU)

Lowest one day new case count since March 17. Excellent news.

So how many dead in the US after these protests? 1 million? Might as well shut the border to the US for the rest of 2020.

The research at least shows much lower exposure while being outside as a few posters mentioned in this thread.
