The cost of living here is ridiculous. I am embarrassed to say what we spend on rent and day care and, even with taking a massing pay cut, I would have more disposable income living in Calgary.
If you are looking for a reason why Australians are the world's biggest gamblers I'd say it is because you have a country founded by convicts and colonialists with gambling always being a popular form of entertainment, being exploited by flashy poker machines, modern advertising, and easy to use apps, all while successive governments have turned blind eye as long as the money keeps propping up their balance sheets.

Yeah, I also think theres a part of it that is historically part of their culture.
The Brits will bet on just about anything, lots of sports teams and venues are sponsored by gambling websites, add that in with a large Asian population that also culturally tend to love to gamble and it makes a degree of sense.
And yeah, its probably a very powerful lobby and a lot of money for the Government to say 'No' to.

The majority of patrons in casinos everywhere are Asian... Gambling is a hugely popular past time of Asians.
It's weird, though, if you believe these stats Australians are the biggest gamblers in the world. So then why when you go to an Australian casino is 98% of the people in there Asian?
(I don't know that to actually be the case, it's just what was mentioned above)

I think that’s explained away by a perception issue. Usually, when something like a demographic is much different than what you’re used to, it seems highly exaggerated.
Additionally, Australian and Asian are not mutually exclusive things. You can very very easily be both. In fact, in Sydney and Melbourne the population of Asian Australians is over 25%, which is not insignificant.

However, this list is by actual dollars gambled. China, on average, has much lower incomes. Also, gambling is illegal in China. So, the vast majority of gambling there will be under the table and not reported.

That is interesting. I would have guessed way lower, but it may just be a perception issue, as I did notice there were way fewer visible minorities than in Canada, which may have skewed my thoughts. I was also only doing touristy things, which may have been a factor as well.
I have a very small sample at the casino as well, so I could have just been there at an usual time.
What to do with the pot of pokies winnings left mysteriously unclaimed by punters each year?
In NSW, state law gives the government wide discretion to determine this, so long as there is a "community benefit".
This is how a Jackie Chan blockbuster flop and the world's richest greyhound race came to be among the biggest beneficiaries of a fund designed to redistribute gambling prizemoney back to the broader NSW community.
The 2017 sci-fi thriller Bleeding Steel, which featured Chan duelling with an evil villain atop the sails of the Sydney Opera House, was funded in part by a one-off direct grant of $850,000 from the NSW government.
The money came from the Community Development Fund, which is administered by the Office of Responsible Gambling and financed through unclaimed poker machine jackpot prizes and unclaimed gaming machine tickets.

Just two months into his unexpected promotion to Prime Minister of Australia, Scott Morrison MP has today revealed just how relatable and average he is.
After being spotted playing football in full length cargo pants, posting a dorky video of Question Time with a Fatman Scoop soundtrack, and wearing a Hurley surfwear cap to just about every single press engagement, the Prime Minister – who colloquially known by his self-given nickname of ‘Scomo’ – has today revealed he also has a crippling addiction to the several predatory online gambling apps.
