I wonder if the lines won’t be Bennett-Jankowski-Czarnik and Frolik-Ryan-Brouwer/Lazar to start? A mix of left and right shots on each line.
|
The Bennett-Jankowski- czarnik line would be a defensive issue and could use more experience on the line. Brouwer won't work, so Frolik.
Bottom line is probably Lazar-Ryan-Brouwer/Mangiapane/Foo
I suspect Dube gets minor ice time.

Send them to moon. No room for these types of players. If Hathaway signs a deal in arbitration or before, both will hit waivers this season.
You can't have both of them on the roster this year.

Well based upon logic and everything we've heard 11 forwards are more or less guaranteed to be in the regular lineup. That will leave 3 more spots for the likes of Brouwer, Hathaway, Lazar, Mangiapane, Foo, Dube or Klimchuk.
I could see a couple scenarios where they are both on the team - one would be if no prospects make the team, another if Brouwer is moved or bought out and one prospect makes the jump.
Lazar and Hathaway aren't bad to keep around as the 13th and 14th forwards. But yea I can understand your logic if you have lost all hope and think Brouwer is here next season no matter what and no prospect makes it.
I personally think something will have to give with at least one of Brouwer, Hathaway or Lazar because I believe at least one of Foo, Dube or Mangiapane makes the team.

So 3 left shots on one line and 3 right shots on another? Maybe but I doubt it

Frolik is a left shot but he's played RW for a long time now. The only RH shots to play with those two are Brouwer and Foo. And Hathaway but I'm not including him. I am not the Brouwer hater some are, but they need someone different.
I'm not opposed to splitting those two guys up - playing Ryan with Bennett and Czarnik/Foo and Jankowski with Mangiapane and Lazar/Brouwer.

With Brouwer bought out, the Flames might look something like this next year.
Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Jankowski- Neal
Bennett-Backlund-Frolik
Mangiapane-Ryan-Czarnik
Hathaway
Lazar

I'd probably have Lazar on the 4th line rather than 2 players with limited experience. He has great wheels and can forecheck opponents relentlessly. It would be nice to see him with players who have more skill and speed than Stajan and Brouwer. Otherwise, I like this a lot.

Well they were 3 & 4 in hits per game, and Ferland/Brouwer were 1/5...
I personally think Lazar has a place on this team.

No matter what line combos you pencil in, it is amazing that the flames basically managed to improve every forward line by infusing a more skilled replacement.
At the roster cost of a slight immediate downgrade in Hamilton to hanifan.

And now suddenly Hathaway as the 13th forward seems to make way more sense with Brouwer out of the way

So basically now that Brouwer's gone here's how I'd classify the forwards:
Top-sixers
Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuk, Neal, Backlund, Lindholm
Bottom-sixers
Frolik, Bennett, Jankowski, Ryan
So that opens up four spots for the fourth line and 13/14th forwards.
I'd argue there are six candidates for those spots:
Dube (LHS), Foo (RHS), Hathaway (RHS), Lazar (RHS), Klimchuk (LHS), Mangiapane (LHS)
Should be an interesting camp to watch.

In my book Lazar is out of the lineup before Hathaway.

I think they're situational.
Let's assume you have Hathaway, Lazar and Foo on the roster.
One look is offence, one look is safety, one look is physical.

My guess is that the "bottom five" get rotated regularly. Lazar, Hathaway, Ryan, Czarnik, Manginess and or who ever should split the time on the ice according to ability. If a player has a bad night, they can take a sit. Something the Flames rarely did last season.

You are missing Czarnik who is all but guaranteed to start the year on the team.

What about:
Gaudreau-Monahan-Neal -offense
Bennett-Lindholm-Tkachuk -heavy hitting and grinding offense
Frolik-Backlund-Ryan -tough matchups defensive forwards
Czarnik-janko-lazar - potentially a good offensive line to capitalize on bad matchups. Czarnik has the creativity and janko can finish. I always like what lazar brings in the dirty areas so I think he'd compliment them (this is my discount version of gaudreau-monahan-ferland lol)
Very unlikely klimchuk makes the team. Upside looks negligable at best. Would much rather have too or mangiapane get ice time with the club.

This is how I envision the lines as well. Tkachuk - Jankoski - Neal being the second scoring line and Backlund's line remaining the shutdown line. I really like it because it puts Jankowski is a position to succeed with two really talented players, which hopefully allows him to take a major step next season. With his size and reach I'm really excited to see what he can do this year-- especially after watching ACs highlight package of him
