Default Canadian HULU to Launch on November 30

"We're no longer in the cable TV business. We're in the video entertainment business," he said as he unveiled a beta version of Rogers On Demand Online Monday night ahead of the national rollout.

Rogers will offer its cable and high-speed Internet subscribers access online to an initial 15 channels which it owns in whole or partly, including Citytv, Rogers Sportsnet, A&E Canada, Bio and G4 Canada.

Cable TV subscribers will be able to watch the broadband content anywhere in Canada where their computer can access the Internet after user authentication.

By the second half of 2010, the Rogers service will be extended to a mobile app, social media sites and live event streaming.

Content distributors to have already pacted with Rogers on its online video service include Warner TV and Michael Eisner's web studio Vuguru.
It's not exactly clear at this point, at least from this article, whether any ol' Canadian can go online and view the content or whether only Rogers cable/internet subscribers will have access (or it's just extra stuff Rogers customers will get).

Definitely just for Robbers costumers. Why is it that TV in Canada tries to suck so hard?

Dammit we're so close! Bloody Rogers ... the one article mentions an iphone app ... hopefully Rogers iPhone users can use that, but I kinda doubt it.

The Americans kick our ass so hard on things like this. Is that the trade off we get for having more relaxed rules on downloading?

There were rumblings in the past week or so that Shaw is coming out with their own iPhone app: http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/iphone-...an-iphone-app/

What are the chances of Rogers and Shaw working together on something like this?

Mind you, since everything is restricted to Rogers subscribers and deals primarily with Rogers-owned properties anyway, another of my friends helpfully pointed out that this really is nothing like HULU at all.

Yeah, this really doesn't seem anything like HULU, I just wish that the slingbox app for the iPhone used 3G.

Makes me wish when Bell says they're working on VOD, that they actually mean that VOD will be available soon.

Yeah but can you imagine the amount of bandwidth to watch a show on your iPhone? I bet you will when you get your bill.

I'll stick with Hulu thanks. Canadian content and providers suck as always.

I only watch old TV shows and old movies on Hulu anyway so that content will probably be exempt from the subscription stuff which will probably be pay for HD new TV and movies stuff.

It does suck but it's not like we Canadians are supposed to be able to watch Hulu anyway...

Well I figured that was what the advertising was all about Mr. Ad Hominem.

I'm sure News Corp. would be quite well off without the Hulu money.

Or did you not RTFA?

It's lame because the service was first introduced as free. It's like handing out candy to children and then taking it away.

That is true, but I also highly doubt they'd let you stream off anything other than wifi.

Wow, it is after reading threads like this that I am reminded that while I might not have ready access to poutine, ketchup chips, Aero bars, and the ever delectable Chalet sauce, I don't have to put up with crap like this anymore. It is pretty nice to be able to hook up the laptop to the TV, go to Hulu, and have an immidiate catalogue of videos to watch - that along with Netflix on the Xbox, and I am really beginning to wonder what I have cable for at all.

it is very nice, i just have to do one extra step and enable Hotspot Shield. but normally i just torrent any TV shows i want for the higher quality and not having to worry about any buffering issues

None of this matters anyway. Knowing how these things usually pan out in Canada, it'll just be CBC News and reruns of Anne of Green Gables.
