He could be quite a steal if he learns how to become even a passable 3rd pairing defender. His offensive skill is pretty high end.

If his defense is as bad as stated, but his skill and offensive abilities are as good as stated, I wonder if maybe they'd try to move him to forward. Doubtful, but would be an out of the box idea.

Definitely one of the more interesting prospects to follow the development of. Fantastic at one thing, horrible at one thing - let's see if the Flames can work on his shortcomings. His positives might make him a huge asset for this organization one day.

Great skills but horrible defensively.

Like he gets beat allll the time from attackers going wide and gets danced on the regular.

Really really needs to work on his gap control and stick work.

I don’t know why more NHL teams don’t try this. It’s also a good hedge against in game injuries to the D core if someone can step in for spot duty. Easier to go 11 forward than 5 defenseman

I don’t see much downside in trying a guy like Erik Gustaffson as a forward/powerplay QB.

But it’s virtually never tried long term

Kylington is Poirier light… half the offensive ability, half as bad defensively.

Well ALL Darryl preaches is gap control, sticks in lanes,
And proper positioning.

If they signed him it's obvious they think they can change him enough to make him a useful player.

more than a few examples of one dimensional defencemen around the league now and historically playing top 4 minutes.
Really like the 5 selections from the past three drafts in the 3rd round. So many have clamoured for high risk high reward prospects selected outside the first round. Here they are

I am very excited about Poirier as I feel like he has so much potential upside...defence can be taught, right? :-S

Because creating offense from the blueline is an entirely different skillset than creating offense as a forward

But there’s a lot of fourth line forwards getting NHL time that can’t do either

Could Gustaffson at forward possibly been a worse option than Rinaldo in the playoffs for us?

He’s too talented to not sign to an ELC. I think some viewed him as a late 1st rounder at the time of the draft. I don’t think there’s too much correlation to what Darryl wants in them signing him

He was brought up specifically by Treliving in the press conference and now gets his contract. Must have really impressed everyone this week

Wish they tried this with Kylington....speed, great wrist shot and is always up on the play anyway.

Yes. It’s an entirely different position. The 4th line isn’t typically designed around creating offense. Why trade a 3rd for an 18 minute/night defenseman and then play him 5 minutes a night at forward?

Even if he manages to bring his defensive game from horrendous to decently below-average, he'll have himself a great career.

Not many, if any more offensively gifted defensive prospects.

Think he legitimately has a great chance to surpass 80 points this year in the Q

The old adage was you draft offence and teach defence. Maybe they can do that here.
