The alternative was likely him playing in the KHL.
Would you pass?

At least Matthews and Marner had three productive seasons in the NHL before they got their current deals. Kaprizov has 62 games including playoffs.

Have him play in the KHL, retain his rights indefinitely, and not have to pay him until he comes back, by which time the worst of those insane buyout hits might be over and the team will be financially capable of competing again?

I would.
There is zero chance he gets anything close to that money in the KHL.
Call his bluff.

I get that he was almost a PPG player, but only 55 NHL games in his career. That just seems crazy to me.

Came to post just this. This is insanely risky for the Wild. Then again they have a track record of signing insane contracts.

I like it. I'd rather have a good player in his prime get paid than the way it used to be, with old guys getting paid on what they used to be able to do.

Exactly. The cap hasn't changed so this also means older players will get squeezed.
I don't know if this is necessarily what the players want (that is, the cap shifting more and more to younger players). But at least the old guys banked their escrow money for last year. The young guys will be paying that back for years.

This guy is one of the most dynamic forwards in the league, this is not an overpayment. He’s also not a “rookie”, the guy has 7 years of professional hockey under his belt.

Definitely the Matthews and Marner deals that ruined it.

This seems like a big risk for Minnesota. Hopefully Kaprizov is a star player for them.

How does that make sense to you?!
At the first sign of adversity, he's going to peace out back to the KHL.

Just a negotiating tactic for a player who, as far as I understand, can’t sign a offer sheet.
Edit: I really don’t understand your comment. If he leaves the league they aren’t stuck with his contract… and flight risk is calculated into a contract in your mind? Which part is supposed to not make sense to me. Have you seen this guy play hockey?

That is insane. Kirill is so much better than Elias it isn't even close. Elias deserves $6 million max. Dude can't score even strength.

Calgary had a similar situation when Tkachuk held out. Trev blinked because he wanted him in the lineup. And now Tkachuk is in the cat bird position.
Minny isn’t winning with him on the bench.

I was like "what the hell"? So I looked at it and they actually have about 16.

The NHL would've been a far worse place without Kaprizov. Thrilled about this.

It's the opportunity cost of signing that contract vs another player.
It's completely nonsensical.

If he puts up 90+ points I will agree...seems a bit risky though
