Default James Neal Buyout

A possible trade for James Neal fell through over the weekend and I expect James to be on the waiver list tomorrow for the purpose of a buyout.

Now the Edmonton media is claiming this was the plan all along - I still remember when they were bragging that they won this trade... I'm so glad we got a third round pick from this trade.

You'd have to be an idiot to take James 'No Deal' Neal.

The only people stupid enough were Edmonton. The guy is done. Didnt they waive him last season and nobody claimed?

At least Lucic is still serviceable. And we got a 3rd round pick out of James Neal stat padding with McDavid on the PP that first year.

James the Buyout Neal

Don't forget

The Oilers also retained 12.5% of Lucic's salary

Oilers are paying 2.75 million for the next couple years for both Lucic and Neal to not play for them, and lost a 3rd rounder in the process

Turned out to be a 3rd and 6th in fact (Whynot and Beck).

This will give the Oilers a $1,916,667 cap hit until 2025. Add the Lucic salary retention to that, and it's more than $2.5 million in deal cap space.

And it only cost them a 3rd round pick to get that cap space. Shrewd move.

Oh yes.... there was retained salary in the deal for sure, can you imagine, having $750,000 on the books for Lucic (for Neal's deal) and another 2.875 million (50% retained) for Neal and losing another asset to just get him off the books.

Lucic is expensive, paid more than he's worth, but hell, he's still a player. I like him. I'm a big Lucic fan.

I thought this deal sucked %1000 when it happened, but Neal fell of the Earth and Lucic kicked some ass.

Let's be thankful that Neal padded his stats just enough to give us a 3rd rounder, before falling off the Earth

What a disaster of a hockey team, the comedy material just never stops.

What about making him our captain for next year? I think, unless we acquire some captain material in a trade or through free agency, he's a good choice based on our current roster.

I like to think that it was motivation to stick it to the Flames that got him off to such a good start with the Oilers.

He stuck it alright.

An asset that turned into two picks. Whynot and Beck.

Oilers will be paying Neal ($2mx4) and Lucic ($750Kx2) to not play for them.

#### James Neal. Glad he'll be out of the game and nothing but a footnote in Calgary Flames history.

It was uncanny how perfectly that worked out for us... and with the COVID shutdown, Edmonton was unable to shut him down to save the pick.

Don’t like that it frees up cash for them though. Too many buy outs allowed in the league in my opinion…. Should pay your penance…

The math on this:

2021/22: $2,666,667
2022/23: $2,666,667
2023/24: $1,916,667
2024/25: $1,916,667

Calgary gets a solid bottom 6 forward. Even if you think Lucic is being paid twice what he's worth (the dead cap is about the same as the buyout/retention cost in the first two years of Neal), Calgary doesn't get the extra two years of cap hit and walks away with the pick.

What a story this has been. The ups and down, the arrogance from the Edmonton side. Heck even some on this site and probably happy I'm not one to go back and search and re-paste comments.

James Neal was a terrible signing, one fraught with a complete lack of understanding of what his more recent seasons were before coming to Calgary, but the trade to Edmonton for Milan Lucic was a great one.

Huge actual dollar savings, a 3rd round pick that turned into a 3rd and a 6th plus now the headache goes on for two more years in Edmonton.

By my calculations that's a total of $22.2M in cap hit over six years in Edmonton ($19.2 Neal, $3M Lucic) for a total of 41 points of production or $541K per point.

Calgary will have $21M in cap hit over four years with 43 point already and if he gets two 20 point seasons that's 83 points and $253K per point.
