Looks like the Sens aren't going to repeat their previous mistakes, and actually start paying their good players to stick around. It'll be interesting to see what they pay Brady.

Contract is backloaded. Think the Sens are hoping they are going to be paying him actual market value per year and don't really care about the cap hit at this stage.

Yeah...I'm not sure this guy has proven anywhere near enough to commit 6 years at what doesn't look to be any sort of actual discount...

I think this is a really nice deal, similar to Farabee.

Mangiapane deserves to be right in this ballpark.

Again, one 34 point season.

Might want a follow up performance before spending bonafide type cash for 6 years.

I thought Cap rules dictate that the lowest paid season cannot be less than 50% of the highest paid season within a contract?

if they are willing to give Batherson ~$5M aav, what will it take to sign Tkachuk, $7M+?

Mangiapane is much better than Batherson.

Let's compare their careers so far:

Mangiapane 18/19:
44GP, 8G, 5A, 13PTS
CF%: 54.65
SF%: 55.66
GF%: 66.67
xGF%: 59.91
SCF%: 58.31

Batherson 18/19:
20GP, 3G, 6A, 9PTS
CF%: 35.06
SF%: 40.83
GF%: 47.62
xGF%: 40.84
SCF%: 36.56

Mangiapane 19/20:
68GP, 17G, 15A, 32PTS
CF%: 53
SF%: 52.26
GF%: 52.94
xGF%: 53.40
SCF%: 55.22

Batherson 19/20:
23GP, 3G, 7A, 10PTS
CF%: 47.04
SF%: 44.78
GF%: 31.82
xGF%: 46.6
SCF%: 47.08

Mangiapane 20/21:
56GP, 18G, 14A, 32PTS with 2PPG and 5PPP
CF%: 55.03
SF%: 56.04
GF%: 56.36
xGF%: 58.56
SCF%: 55.98

Batherson 20/21:
56GP, 17G, 17A, 34PTS with 5PPG and 15(!)PPP
CF%: 47.71
SF%: 47.21
GF%: 44.83
xGF%: 49.96
SCF%: 49.42

Batherson got this contract because he got played on a bad team's powerplay because they lacked anyone else to play in that spot. A bright spot for Batherson is his shooting % though as he shot at 15.3% last season, which isn't "crazy" as you can look at his career average of 14.3% over his 99 games played as perhaps reason to believe he may be a pretty good finisher - and being able to finish plays is definitely an important skillset.

I think this is all kinds of bad for Ottawa, but the main point of my post is to illustrate that Mangiapane (especially considering RFA/UFA status) is worth more than this (if this does in fact reflect the market).

You guys haven't watched Batherson. Extremely talented player that will make this deal a steal in 2 years. Senators are betting on him here and I think its gonna work out just fine.

One 34 point season.... in 55 games. ~60 over a full season? He's underpaid. Once Stutzle and Norris take big steps he's going to look even better.

Context matters. Batherson hasn't had the luxury of being brought along slowly.. or the fortune of playing alongside veteran analytic darlings in Ryan and Backlund. He was thrown to the wolves on an absolutely terrible roster. Those analytics are misleading.

I actually quite like this deal for the Senators. Batherson will be a legitimate top six right winger for the entirety of this deal. The Elias Lindholm special.

Ottawa is starting to pay their young players despite the team not doing much. Doesn’t feel like their rebuild is going to amount to much unless Stutzle and Sanderson become franchise players.

I can't argue this for the most part. Batherson may be getting fed to the wolves, and it's tough when that happens for players to overcome. I argued exactly this when it came to Bennett and his treatment in the Flames roster after his rookie season (slightly different circumstances, as Bennett's wolves were his own linemates in Jankowski and Brouwer)

The one thing I'd say is that in facing those tough circumstances, I feel like you'd like to see a bit more positivity from the underlying numbers to justify a 6 year contract like this. Right now it looks like a hot stretch on a powerplay jacked up his production. It'll be an important season for Batherson.
