Played my men’s league games at the coral for years. Won’t miss paying for parking, but that rink is pure vintage. It is sad it has to go.

Anybody know what the plans are for the entrance doors to the Dome entrance that the walkway serviced? New set of stairs going up there or blocking those doors off?

Any of the elders know if the walkway an original feature of the Dome when it first opened or added afterwards?

Answered my own question by finding this video on YouTube of the Saddledomes opening. Looks like the walkway was there but wasn’t covered at opening, but the supports were there so likely completed soon after.

The part showing the state of the art suites is priceless.

That YouTube video is amazing! Hard to believe it now, but it truly was a state of the art facility when it was built. Definitely helped put Calgary on the international map when it came to sporting facilities.
Sad to see the Corral go. Always thought it would be a cool arena if they pumped 50-75 million to completely gut and renovate it. Looking forward to the new BMO centre. Should be a nice addition to revamped entertainment district.

I have such fond memories of the Corral.

Watching Mike Vernon and the Wranglers taking to the ice. Mike Heidt was the leading scorer one year with 95 points as a defenseman. Leigh Verstraete (sp?) just a tough tough kid. The Bracko's

The Calgary Cowboys in their short but spectacular stint. I remember the year that they went to the playoff and played the Nordiques and all hell broke lose and criminal charges were laid.

The Calgary Flames home opener against Quebec.

Just the design of the building. the high boards, the seats that went up at that extreme angle. the double decker bench. The run to the semi's with Pat Riggins playing lights out. The fact that they only lost 5 games at home. The playoff game where Kent Nilsson got carried off the ice, and when he returned to the ice leaping over the boards and the crowd just exploding.

It was a grand old building. the concessions were simple, they had all of those old pictures on the wall. It was cramped and cold. the dressing rooms were simple.

I still remember playing an adult beer game on the ice and feeling the ice creak when you took a stride, and the first time the Captain tried to vault over the boards on a line change and thinking this is higher then i thought.

Modern buildings don't have the uniqueness and the heart that the Corral had. They don't build em like they used to.

Like with what they did with the CNE Coliseum in Toronto.

I still think a 5,000-8,000 seater would work in this city. The Corral was sitting on some valuable real estate in addition to it proximity to the main arena though.

Maybe in a different part of downtown (say West End).

The front section (with the various concrete sculptures) is now gone.

Our family friend painted the lower mural that was on the East Side of the Corral.
