In the article with that diagram it talks about renting the Car2Go for that trip for 2-3 hours. It would be better if instead of showing the one-way cost it showed round trip to better highlight the price differences between the different options.
"With Car2Go, an hour-long booking would cost $16-$19 and three hours would cost $36-$45. So even if you drove yourself to the appointment and stopped to pick up groceries on the way home, it would still cost half the price of the next most convenient option."

FYI, Montreal-based Communauto - which recently acquired successful carsharing service Pogo in Edmonton - is planning to move in by 2021 or 2022.

There's obviously a market for this in Calgary, City Council will probably learn lessons from Car2Go's departure, and car sharing will return sooner rather than later. I wouldn't get too worried about it.
I'm waiting for the first transportation sharing company to introduce electric fat bikes for winter use in the Alberta cities. I think that would be a huge step forward.

I dont know what the market interest would be like for a Hell's Angel's version of Uber.
Seems like it would be a little extreme for the mainstream.

That's a big difference though. Obviously I'm paying more for the service of being driven.

Personally, it's only preferable if I've been drinking or am in an unfamiliar city...or it's really cold out (warm car and no walk).
I prefer walking 5 minutes to the car and having control of my route and radio than watching the uber spin in circles for 5 minutes to still end up on the wrong side of the road, followed by the potential for insufferable small talk and/or a nausea inducing drive. Not having to park at final destination is often a big plus, though.

^ What a massive collapse. I don't know the details of their takeover by Share Now, but it seems to have gone downhill fast after that.

I wonder how much of it has to do with the latest smart cars not being sold in NA.

It's crazy. You'd have to think there is margin below the cost of ride sharing yet still be profitable.

Yeah. What is the actual economics of running a profitable car or ride sharing business? Is it possible without shirking responsibilities?

Was trying to think of a good corollary - I'm sure there's something better, but C2G was like Red Box (well designed system that made efficient and convenient use of an old approach...but still required literal leg-work on the part of the customer), but then Uber and Lyft out 'Netflix'ed them within a year or two (more mindlessly convenient for the consumer, exploits infrastructure that they don't own and is sold to them at well below that price it probably 'should' be).

I don’t know if that’s quite right as both Uber and Car2go were / are trying to hold on until driverless cars make them the dominant brand.
Did C2G ever actually make money? It didn’t seem possible.

How couldn't it? The utilization of each unit had to be higher than individual, private ownership. Or at least that was the business case.

This model of creating something that is good, but totally unsustainable for various reasons is a weird way to run a business. Do these guys expect to run at a loss for several years and hope that any competing technology is driven out by then, and then they can jack of up prices to something that actually works?
Smart cars and Mercedes are expensive to begin with, then you have maintenance, gas, random repairs, insurance, etc. Was C2G really charging enough for the use of the cars?
