I just read the article. There's no way a list like this will please everyone-a hundred different jounalists will have a hundred different lists. For the most part, I find his rankings OK, but as for the different evaluations and descriptions of each player-I don't think he knows what he's talking about.....

Ranking the best NHL players under 23: Corey Pronman’s top 155
Corey Pronman Oct 22, 2020
He had Tkachuk at #5
Zary #60
Dube #63
Valimaki #112
Petterson # 114
no Pelletier on that list but he made the sept 7, 2021 longer list at the longer list at #174 and moved up to #99 on this latest list

Agree. He is not forcing the Flames to make it a priority to turn him pro.
Mason McTavish who looks to be the surest thing (outside of Power) out of the 2021 draft is ranked #24
Cole Sillinger who jumped to the NHL straight out of the USHL with half the points of Coronato was ranked #44.
After Coronato scores 85 in 51 in the USHL and 13 in 8 in the playoffs going 12 in 13 at Harvard is a let down
Johnny Hockey went from 72 in 60 in the USHL and 11 in 11 in the playoffs was 44 in 44 in Boston College and was not seen as a top prospect as a freshman.
Kyle Connor had 80 in 56 in the USHL and 4in 4 in the playoffs went 71 for 38 as a Freshman in Michigan and needed a year in the AHL after that.

although it turns out he was
I don't really know enough about Coronato one way or another, I do know that 13 games is a small sample size (and yes the story could be better, worse, or the same with more games)

1) Josh Doan: 25 points, 1.0 PPG
2) Matthew Knies: 20 points, 1.0 PPG
3) Carter Mazur: 18 points, 1.0 PPG
4) Matthew Coronato: 12 points, 1.0 PPG
5) Chaz Lucius: 12 points, 0.86 PPG
So yeah Pronmon is a bit out to lunch in calling it middling performance. The biggest issue here is that Harvard has only played 12 games, so he's just not playing enough hockey.

These rankings by Pronmon seem pretty lazy tbqh.
You don't get a ton of rookie AHL players pulling PPG averages this often regardless of their "puck skill". What Pelletier is doing, on a club without any other real high end offensive talent is certainly notable. PPG is also the best indicator I know of in terms of U-20 Freshmen as you've pointed out and it is a pretty exclusive club.
For context - Guadreau was right at 1.0PPG his first year at BC before drastically upping the ante, and this is where you expect to see the elite prospects distance themselves in years 2-3.

oh I get it. I guess I'm just reflecting that Johnny's size always was and will be an issue- still at that size he was 'only' a PPG in his freshman year, and yet in retrospect is an elite NHL point producer

This is Wheeler not Pronman. I don't know him as well. But I enjoy his articles. So like with all things it's an opinion of one person. But I think it shows that the Flames prospect pool:
- Isn't as bad as some make it out to be
- Is improving over time
- Is still middle of the road and lacks high end prospects.

Not looking great for the Pacific teams so far:
32) Seattle
28) Vancouver
22) Vegas
20) Arizona
19) Edmonton
Amazing that the Flames will be 3rd among the division teams
