Makes sense IMO. I always thought hed be an amazing fit with thos group.
And I see NJ as the 2and best trade partner for the Flames. They have a lot to offer.

Reminder that Martinez is not a rental. He still has another year after this season.

That would have been a massive deal. Any idea what was rumoured to be going to NJ?

Imagine trading away 2 2nd round picks and still having three left in the next two drafts.

It may be short sighted, but it's how we do things.

I just cannot see any team in a playoff race trading its best, healthy defenseman. I don't see it as not being proactive, or short-sighted, but instead telling the team "we're done". I just don't see that happening.
If good news comes back on Gio or Hammer before the deadline, then I could see it, not overly likely, but could see it.

I really wish we would sell if this is the market and then retool in FA and draft. Unfortunately we have too many injuries so tre wont do anything and we will be in the same place next yr.

Yah, when every team in a playoff position is active in adding defensemen, why would Calgary trade theirs? They won't. I suppose I understand the fear of losing Brodie and Hamonic to the market for "nothing" but, in a cap world, cap space is something. I'm okay if both those guys sign somewhere else after the season and we're left with cap space. And I'm okay if they're both re-signed. But, I'd be p'od if they were traded for draft picks while we're in the middle of a playoff race.

And you know why that is also right? Or is this just another shot at the GM.

Would much rather pay 2 seconds for Martinez, who has some term left, than a second + for Scandella.
I wonder how many D buyers are left after today.

It certainly seems like they were working on a blockbuster. I’d kill to know all the details of that trade.

I'd be upset if the Flames made either of those moves.
If the plan is to compete with this core, at this stage, they are better off saving all of their assets and figuring it out on the UFA market.
I actually like the Flames current stance that they won't trade away significant futures for a rental.
I realize that Martinez isn't a rental, but the Flames are getting Valimaki and Giordano back at some point. Valimaki may not return this year, but he'll be back next year. Both Andersson and Kylington look able to take over a Martinez role IMO too.

Imagine paying half a billion dollars for an NHL team and being given the best expansion rules in NHL expansion history to acquire players.

After seeing some of the other returns this deal actually seems kind of reasonable.

It would be awful nice to be handed a team and a half worth of NHL quality depth, and not have to do any work to have an excellent team on day one. I'd be pissed if I was the former expansion teams who basically got waiver fodder to choose from.

It is funny that that is the prevailing view now.
At the time he was heavily criticized for not taking the best current team he could, and trading for too many futures.
In reality, he had to do a massive amount of work.

Not to mention the GM did an amazing job of drafting players that gelled together and were far more than the sum of their parts. What Vegas did was unheard of in professional sports.
