I haven't booked travel for my trip in November yet!

Although I booked my room months ago (and cancelled and re-booked several times as the price drops).

I'm going to Vegas tomorrow because I need to go. I'm going to stay at the Jockey Club because it's a ghost to me. I miss the old hotels, the New Frontiers and the Stardusts. I admire the little guys that get literally and figuratively blocked out by the new towers and the new schemes and gold windows.

I once had a business in Caesar's before I was even old enough to be in their casino. We bought roman coins at auctions for pennies and made passable jewelry and then sold it to impressed rich men hoping to likewise impress their dates. It worked very well because that's what Vegas is, passable impressions.

I made enough money to live in the Tod Motel down the strip. It wasn't safe. The desk guy told me once that I looked like a narc and that's why no one bothered me. I saved all I could and wanted some day to move to a better place, a real strip hotel. Not Caesars. But maybe the little time share next door.

The people that bought things in my store were gamblers, often times losers, sometimes up a little. I engaged them as an innocent, a young and inconceivably dumb servant. I was nothing. Someone to step on. Someone in the way of a greater purpose. I learned the difference between buying something and paying for it. And that there are consequences to both.

Then I chickened out. After six months I sold my share of the business and moved one state over. The Tod was my last residence. I ran but not from the Tod.

Since then I've owned condos on the strip that would not pass an inspection in any third world country but did so in Vegas. They all caught an eye and they all went wild with appreciation...passable and impressive.

My last couple times in Vegas is just a crush of people and blur of expensive restaurants...food whipped into its essence and broken down into its parts, a passable impression of its true form. It's Las Vegas on a plate for $175 .

I'll go back tomorrow with a few more dollars than I had when I was hocking relics. Not much but enough to stay where I want. I'll also go with the fear of old coins that bring new hope. Of loss. And of ghosts. A golden shatter of window falling through the night sky to the desert below.

Vegas tips:

Restaurants - Olives in the shops in Bellagio; Le Cirque or Noodles in the Bellagio; Nine Fine Irishmen in NYNY;
Buffet - Aria or the Seafood Buffet at the Rio
Shows - any Cirque, Penn & Teller
Gambling - there is still 3-2 blackjack but you really have to search it out
Shopping: I still like the North Premium Outlet and the Fashion Show mall

Bill's Gambling Hall doesn't exist anymore, it's called the Cromwell now. Never been to Bautista's but heard some mixed reviews. If you happen to be a food snob then I don't think you'd like it.

Sorry, to quote my own post, but I just spent 6 days at the Venetian, and they are running 1/2 now, not 1/3. Aria has 1/3 and so does the Wynn I believe. I love the Venetian poker room.

Sorry to be THAT guy, but what's the atmosphere in Vegas now? Is it business as usual, the show will go on that type of mentality down there?

I was about to pull the trigger to book for a Christmas trip down there, but the Oct 1 incident happened...

I'm staying at the Venetian with Vlad. That guys rolls. It's busy. The lights are on, the restaurants are full, the bars are loud. Most of the signs still have messages of support and calls for witnesses. But the show must and is going on. There was a vigil/walk down the strip the other night...large group out and about so that was cool. In general I think it's quieter, maybe less drunken stupidity. More cops. No noticeable change in security.

I've noticed several "citizen journalist" types running around with cameras trying to talk to people. Gawkers still head down to that end of the strip for a look.

It's weird though cause I'm here trying to put together an exhibition and have had absolutely no luck for the last six months. This was my last kick at it and the whole tone of the people I've been talking to is different. I've now got my choice of dates, all the support I need and a even a small budget. There's no reason for the change other than they now think it's a better fit than before. i don't think they've had any cancellations.

I've got a few long term friends here and they say generally most people have so many questions and there is a major lack of trust for the investigation in general. There was definitely another shooting at the Bellagio about an hour after the Mandalay but no coverage whatsoever. There was a guy arrested in Tennessee the day after the shooting. He had a car full of bump stocks and ammo. He's the same angry white man character but he isn't talking at all, yet they immediately said he had nothing to do with Vegas. I'd say there's a lot of locals who are unusually anxious and likely fairly traumatized.

I think you will have a totally normal experience. Rent a lambo. See Cirque. Get hammered. In that order.

I saw the video of a lady claiming there was gunfire and the front doors were shattered at Bellagio. There is also eye witnesses claiming that there wasn't gunfire or broken glass at Bellagio. I tend to believe the latter because there was no crime scene cordoned off at Bellagio.

All resorts were closed and the casinos were closed down too, most of the resorts had people gathered in their convention centers.

Until it is officially reported otherwise by reputable sources, I don't believe any of the conspiracy theories.

I was there during the massacre. The next day was somber and quiet. It was back to business as usual on Tuesday.

I'm going to Vegas in two weeks and I'm sure this thread has lots of recommendations but I don't want to sift through all the pages. I'm looking for some casual dining recommendations with some decent food, reasonably priced and not too snobby or "inventive." I'll probably hit Bautista's one day and a dinner buffet at one of the resorts. I was thinking about checking out that Heart Attack Grill on Freemont for the novelty of it but a buddy of mine said it wasn't worth it. Are there any options for me on/near the strip?

I'll be there in a couple weeks too.

In'n'out burger is now on the strip on the Linq walkway.

There is a Fat Burger, "close" to MGM Grand but I'm sure you probably don't want to each there, especially if you've eaten there in Calgary. But if you do, it is north of MGM Grand, just north of the M&M Store and Coca Cola store.

Like Mexican? I eat at Gonzalez & Gonzalez in NewYorkNewYork each trip I make.

I'm going to try Nacho Daddy. I'm not sure how to get to it the best way. I think you can get to it from the street, along Harmon, but I'm wondering if you can get to it from within Miracle Mile Mall in Planet Hollywood.

Not sure if Rainforest Cafe is up your alley or not. My wife and I had a tradition of eating breakfast there on our last day, but they stopped serving breakfast, the dorks!

Shake Shack at NYNY!

Tom's Urban at NYNY! Their breakfasts are massively awesome! I haven't tried other meals there but I'm going to.

Nine Fine Irishmen at NYNY. My buddy and his wife treated us there last time and it was pretty good actually. I think my wife wants to go back there.

I hear there is a good burger joint at <insert resort here>. It isn't hard to find a burger place. Wallburgers is at the Bazaar Shops in front of Bally's. I've heard mixed reviews on it though.

I have been following a couple of poker vloggers lately, and one of them has been raving about Dirty Dog. They take a hot dog and wrap it in bacon and put other stuff on it, depending on what dog you get. It cannot be healthy by any stretch of the imagination but you can bet your bottom dollar that I'll be eating there at least once!

Giordano's Pizza at the Bazaar Shops in front of Bally's looks pretty good too. I haven't tried it but I hear its good.

Looking for a breastaurant? My friend enjoyed Twin Peaks, corner of Harmon and the Strip, right by Miracle Mile Mall/Planet Hollywood... then again he ate at The Tilted Kilt once or twice a week here in Lethbridge until it closed down so take that for what it is worth.

Want a good sandwich? In Miracle Mile Mall is Earl of Sandwich. I haven't eaten there yet, but everybody has told me to do so. I'll have to try.

Also, Mon Ami Gabi at Paris. I hear breakfast there is great, if you get there early enough to get a patio table you get great early morning views.

There is no shortage of restaurants to eat at on the strip. Plenty of economical places to eat at, and you'll likely have no problem finding them at any of the resorts that aren't 5 star resorts. Sometimes you may just want to eat fast food. Plenty of options along the strip for that too.

I kind of doubt this has been mentioned but Capo's Speakeasy on Sahara is pretty funny... great mobster shtick. You'll like it and it's nice to get away from the strip too.

Also, shhhhhh.....M&M Cafe....you're welcome.

Lots of good suggestions from Buff, I'll add Ellis Island. It's the casino at the Motel 6 just off the strip. No really. Get their players card, and then order the steak special. It never used to be on the menu, but everyone asks for it. It is a baseball filet, baked potato, etc. for $8. It's fantastic and they have craft beer brewed on site. Play a bit of $5 blackjack while you're there.

Hussongs Cantina between Mandalay and Luxor, hit happy hour for half price margaritas and cheap nachos & tacos. Try the grilled corn plazero.

Ellis Island is on Koval and Paradise east of/ behind Ballys, and I'm pretty sure it is a Super 8 . And do not bother going to the Heart Attack Grill, there's 100's of better restraunts and probably 50 better burger places to eat in Vegas, it's simply a tacky novelty thing, just like Dicks Last Resort. Save yourself, save your dignity and save your money.
