This mornings news with some Cheese...
Warning Warning, Francis article
Jaromir Jagr looks good on Top Line
Quote:
The line GM Brad Treliving had hoped the 45-year-old hired gun would help anchor when he signed him earlier this month.
The line that’s been searching for a consistent right-winger since Jiri Hudler departed in 2016.
Although his first full audition alongside Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan didn’t end up with a win, the chemistry he continues to build with the young duo is undeniable.
|
Quote:
On a night when the 45-year-old right-winger did well to help create several good scoring chances for himself and his linemates, Jagr finished with almost 15 minutes of ice time, an assist on the Flames only goal, and four shots — the most of any Flames forward.
By the end of the night, Jagr was drawing huge cheers from a previously subdued crowd every time he touched the puck, which happened often as the Flames pushed hard to get back into a 2-0 game.
Midway through the third period, Jagr and his line hemmed the Carolina Hurricanes in their own zone for almost a minute of creative cycling that ended with Jagr’s best chance yet to score his first goal for the Flames.
Standing just outside the crease, Jagr whacked at a rebound that Scott Darling snagged with a glove snare the crowd couldn’t believe.
Nor could Jagr, looking skyward in disbelief as the exhausted winger skated back to the bench.

Why the Calgary Flames’ defence has been allowing so many shots
Quote:
When the Flames dipped into the trade market and paid a premium for Travis Hamonic’s services, there was a widespread belief that the move vaulted them into the discussion for which team had the best top-four, alongside the Predators and Ducks.
The top pairing of Dougie Hamilton and Mark Giordano were spectacular last season and the Flames’ rise coincided with the decision to permanently stick the two together. They’ve once again been rock solid this year, aside from a few bounces here and there, tilting the ice in their team’s favour whenever they’ve been on the ice.
It’s the second pairing of Hamonic and T.J. Brodie that’s been worrisome, as they’ve had a rough go holding up their end of the bargain. Everyone vividly recalls the fits Connor McDavid gave them on the national stage in the season opener, but there’s hardly any shame in that considering he does something similar to essentially every defender in his path. The bigger concern is that it hasn’t gotten much better for the pair since then, even as the competition has lightened up.

Jagr making significant impact in Calgary
Quote:
Jagr began the season on the team's third line, and has put up one assist in three contests so far, but head coach Glen Gulutzan has promoted the Czech to the top line for tonight's tilt against the Carolina Hurricanes. He will form a formidable line with Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan.
The future hall of famer was already spotted mentoring Sam Bennett, a first round pick that Calgary still has high hopes for. Gaudreau and Monahan will greatly benefit from having him on their wing.
Defenseman Dougie Hamilton, an ex-Bruin who had the chance to play with Jagr back in Boston, had many positive things to say about Jagr's impact on the team.

Mavericks Acquire Smith, Doetzel From Stockton
Quote:
The Kansas City Mavericks have acquired defenseman Kayle Doetzel and forward Hunter Smith from the Stockton Heat, announced Thursday by the Mavericks’ AHL affiliate.
|
Quote:
Doetzel, 22, began his professional career last season with Stockton. The 6-foot-2, 194-pound defenseman claimed two assists and 59 penalty minutes in 56 games in 2016-17.
The Rosetown, Saskatchewan native played junior hockey with the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League from 2011-12 through 2015-16, totaling 54 points (5G+49A) in 292 games.
Smith, 22, comes to Kansas City in his third professional season. The 6-foot-7, 231-pound forward has totaled 19 points (5G+14A) and 124 penalty minutes in 88 games over the last two years with Stockton.

CHL Top 10 Spotlight: Sarnia Sting
Quote:
Sting brass figured they’d have a good team to work with this season, but a 9-1 start may not have been what they’d envisioned. Key individuals have stepped up to carry the load.
“Adam Ruzicka has really made big strides,” Hatcher noted of his top scorer, the club’s second round pick in the 2016 CHL Import Draft. “He’s so big, strong and he knows how to score goals. We think he was an absolute steal for the Calgary Flames in the fourth round of the draft.”

TWEETS
@Kristen_Odland: Gulutzan: "The only difference is we are getting better goaltending & better speciality teams."
@Kristen_Odland: Gulutzan: “I can’t (explain the lack of discipline) but … we’re in the same situation that we were last year at this time."
@Kristen_Odland: Gulutzan on Versteeg: “He’s OK. Took a shot off the knee and another one off his head that actually broke his helmet.”
@Kristen_Odland: Glen Gulutzan: “It feels like, to me, it’s the same guys taking penalties -- the same types of penalties."
@Fan960Steinberg: Rough night for the #Flames. 5v5 possession finished at 42.1%, and that was with a third period push.

That Sportsnet article on the second pairing is odd. The were terrible against Carolina but overall, they have looked great to me. Didn't realize the "advanced stats" were so negative about that pairing.
Everyone looked bad against Carolina so i'm going to chalk it up to the long break.

Gulutzan: Flames to lose ice time for penalties
Quote:
"It's the same guys taking penalties and the same types of penalties. Those guys are going to dress but they're going to lose some of their prime real estate ice time," Gulutzan told the Canadian Press.
"We'll just clean it up with the guys that can control themselves."
andboth took two penalties in Thursday's loss and are tied for the team lead with six minor penalties each on the season. Tkachuk's roughing minor at the end of the second setup the power-play Williams scored on.
"That was stupid, uncalled for at the end of the period," Tkachuk said of the penalty. "You can't put yourself in that position. I take full responsibility."

I love how there was an article the other day praising the Hamonic/Brodie pairing, and today there is one stating the opposite.

I think the entire NHL is waiting for Hamonic and Brodie to become the next Seabrook / Keith pairing.
There is frustration it didn't happen instantly, but at least they are paying attention.
