Maybe its not allowed within the rules of pole vault/decathlon, but it seems crazy to me that you wouldn't take a 'warm-up run' and establish a score at the lowest possible height, and then defer until your target. But I'm sure the athletes know what they're doing more than me (until it fails on them!)

Yeah definitely seems strange to me as well. Knowing you have multiple attempts. Why not put up a score first to set you up for a result. Neugebauer (the prohibitive favourite) didn't even win. Warner still would have made the podium if he set the bar a little lower.
Again we're sitting on a couch second guessing premier athletes, but with his competitors faltering did he need the higher jump?
To put it in perspective Warner put up 9018 points in 2020, the winner today (Rooth) had 8796. Warner didn't need to match his score in 2020 to win a medal.

Warner was already jumping well below the other front runners. He failed at 4.6m while the German in 1st overall was at 5m. The eventual gold medalist did 5.3m.
Based on my limited understanding of the points system, Warner couldn’t afford to drop that many points by clearing a lower height. Or at least not without putting himself in a position where he’d have to excel at the final two events. The Norwegian in 3rd at the time also failed to score in the pole vault.

Decathlon is so grueling. I expect you plan to not waste any bit of energy. In hindsight I'm sure he wishes he had stepped in at 4.5M, like he did in Toyko. This season he has been entering at 4.6M without issue. He's got to be devastated.

You are not limited in attempts, except by the 3 tries at any given height. You are limited by how much is in the tank - which is probably less at 34. You don't want to waste energy clearing what should be doable heights. He was already the oldest gold medal winner in history last Olympics. Even at 34, getting 'old' is no good

the lowest vault was 4.2m which the Australian made. Warner skipped 4 rounds then failed at 4.6m

Hopefully LePage is still ready to go in 2028. He'll be 32 himself for those Olympics. A shame some of our track stars are in their last games. I don't think they get the credit they deserve. Between Warner, DeGrasse, and Mo Ahmed. They all were stars in 2021, just not in front of fans. So they didn't get the credit they deserved.
I wish Canadians would treat our premier Olympic athletes the same way we do our hockey players. A small critique, but they should be held high between those four year periods. They're treated well enough, but not nearly the same as they do in Europe and Asia. Summer McIntosh deserves a parade imo. To me what she has accomplished is right up their with winning a Championship. We have parades for those... why not for someone who has dominated at the Olympics? Summer should be right at the top as the most well renowned athletes in Canada.

He got 0 points by not setting a single height. A lower height would've given him 760 pts compared to the 1004, 910, and 880 that the eventual medalists got in the event. That probably takes you out of the medals, but who knows? The Gold medalist had a 233 pt deficit with 3 events left and won by 48.
Of all the disciplines where you could conceivably earn 0 points, pole vault seems kinda tricky? Or at least not a simple one to 'play it safe' like say long jump if you've had a fault or two. In the 2023 world championships it looks like he cleared 4.50, then missed 4.60 twice before clearing it, and then eventually topping out at 4.90 (with only 1 more miss until 5.00). So it was a more aggressive strategy than back then when he nearly did the same thing.
FWIW in the last 2 events in 2023 he earned 784+760=1544
A 760 in PV would have put him at 7188; so his 2023 javelin and 1500 scores would have landed him at 8732, winning bronze by 21 pts (and 16 pts behind silver). Damn.
I hope I remember all this #### in 4 years. Decathlon is awesome.
