Canes sign Jake Gardiner - 4 years $4.05 mil AAV
https://www.nhl.com/hurricanes/news/...al/c-308937626
Quote:
RALEIGH, NC - Don Waddell, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed defenseman Jake Gardiner to a four-year contract. The deal pays Gardiner an average annual value (AAV) of $4.05 million.
"Jake is a solid veteran blueliner with a proven history of contributing offensively, including on the power play," said Waddell. "He's had options this summer, but ultimately decided that Carolina is his best fit, and we're thrilled to have him here."

Wow that's a tremendous contract. Easily replaces de Haan. I can't believe nobody offered him more.

The contract will take him to 33. I can imagine that he sacrificed AAV for term.

List of Carolina's offseason acquisitions:
Jake Gardiner
Erik Haula
Ryan Dzingel
James Reimer
Gustav Forsling
Brian Gibbons
Subtractions:
Micheal Ferland
Justin Williams (for now)
Greg McKegg
Calvin de Haan
Curtis McElhinney
Adam Fox
Scott Darling's terrible contract
For my money, that's a pretty good offseason

There has to be a trade coming or Waddell is insane. The last thing the Canes needed was another D man

4.05 million for four years? That's absurd. That's up there with the best contracts in the league on day 1. And they already got Aho on a very fair price this summer. Yeesh... Carolina really has no excuse for being bad anymore.

Haydn Fleury. Which means their top 4 is now Hamilton, Slavin, Faulk, Gardiner. That's outstanding.

Van Reimsdyk, Fleury, and Forsling are all on the LD side.

I don’t think Fleury is ready for top 4. Seems like a 6/7 to me along with Forsling and TVR. Bean can play another year in the AHL then step into the bottom pair

They just traded de Haan to Chicago, so, nobody, really. They have Pesce, Hamilton, and Faulk on the right, but they only had Slavin, Forsling, van Riemsdyk, and Fleury on the left. Gardiner makes a lot of sense, although the potential chaos of a Gardiner - Hamilton pairing in the playoffs is alarming.
Speaking of alarming playoffs stuff, Carolina now has Gardiner and Reimer on the same team. They better try to avoid Game 7s.

Powerplay Quarterback
|
Slavin - Hamilton
Gardiner - Pesce
TVR - Faulk
Fluery
That's an incredibly balanced defense that has serious depth.
Carolina is doing a fantastic job.

You all realize that the Oilers are gonna gift-wrap Puljujarvi to Carolina for Fleury or TVR because of this, right?

A trade has to be coming - since they also stated they wanted a spot for Jake Bean this year.
LD:
Slavin
Gardiner
Forsling
Bean
Fleury
RD:
Hamilton
Pesce
Faulk
TVR
Priskie

Yup Fleury + 3rd for Puljujarvi makes a lot of sense for both sides in some ways, and I've been beating that drum all offseason.
Guess is the Oilers would want Bean straight up though, which would hold it up.

Is the league that cap strapped that this is the most he could get or is the league maybe not as high on the player? Leafs players are always generally overhyped after all.
