This seems unnecessary, it doesn't clear enough space to make the cap work and a trade is still required. It also means the team has to bring in another RHS D to replace Stone.

If they signed Tkachuk and Mangiapane for 8M and 1.2M, they could make it under the cap with 13F, 7D and 2G. This is obviously not a tenable situation going forward, but if you can get Tkachuk, Mangiapane or both for less, it becomes more swallowable.
Gaudreau (6.75) - Monahan (6.375) - Lindholm (4.85)
Tkachuk (8) - Backlund (5.35) - Bennett (2.55)
Mangiapane (1.2) - Ryan (3.125) - Frolik (4.3)
Lucic (5.25) - Jankowski (1.675) - Czarnik (1.25)/Dube (0.778)
LW - C - Dube (0.778)/Czarnik (1.25)
Giordano (6.75) - Brodie (4.650400)
Hanifin (4.95) - Hamonic (3.857143)
Valimaki (0.894166) - Andersson (0.755833)
Davidson (0.7) - RD
Rittich (2.75)
Talbot (2.75)
Buyout: Brouwer (1.5), Stone (1.166667)
Salary Cap: 81.5
Cost of Roster: 51.463 + 21.857542 + 5.5 + 2.666667 = 81.487209
Salary Cap Space: 0.012791

This team can sign Tkachuk at $8M and Mangiapane at $900-950k and ice a roster of 21 players to start the year
Don't buy out Stone and you end up making trades for pennies on the dollar
|
I'd much rather keep Brodie and move Frolik.
Not sure there is a market for Frolik though.

If there are any GMs that still like him, they can probably sign him for less than 50% retained and not give up any assets. Why make the trade?

The cap situation is so tenuous that the flames are trying to cobble together 500k from the lucic contract.
This cap saving is a necessity.

Although I'm not a fan of buyouts, this is probably just enough to squeeze a fit.

Isn't that why we signed Yelesin?

Stone will be alright. With this buyout he can open up his options for teams as his ask will be lower. Will be a steal for some team at a discount price.

He will get a contract from Ottawa for league minimum. He will be forced to wear 61 as a cost cutting measure.
Can actually see him to wpg as they have been decimated. Local boy goes home and not too far away from his wife’s family here.

This gives Tre some space to maneuver, if they dont buy him up other GMs know that he has to make a trade and will limit the return, with the buyout he can make it work without being forced into a poor return deal

Buyouts are still dumb and this doesn't do enough to help.

the problem is that Stone is paid 3x too much for his role and also he has health concerns

Never understood this contract from a dollar and timing perspective.
By re-signing him prior to July 1 in 2017, the Flames had to give up a 5th round pick as well. What was the rush to sign Stone to this contract?

Or.... pick him off waivers... would not that be a nice thing for us - I highly doubt it... but wishful thinking is great.

This was my thought too. I would imagine BT would have tried that option (as it's superior to the buyout IMHO) if it was available.
To me, this points to a lot of teams having cap issues and I am worried that there is not a market for Frolik (who we probably need to keep anyway just to have a warm body at RW)
What a mess
Anyway, good luck Stone. Was always paid too much in my opinion, but certainly was never a problem on or off the ice.

Our problem of Valimaki, Andersson, and to a lesser extent Kyllington all proving to be NHL defencemen and stepping in while Micheal Stone recovers from a career threatening blood clot has nothing to do with the pro scouting being bad, if anything, it's been amazing.
At least we contemplate options like buyouts to ensure we are competitive, versus shipping out for damaged goods and insurance payouts on the cheap like Ottawa.
