One team that will be interesting to watch is Ottawa. Imo Dorian has made some very bad trades since taking over. Zibenijad+2nd for Brassard, Dahlen for extended Burrows, and the Duchene deal. They have the 4th pick and have to sign Stone this summer who is rfa. The Avs have their unprotected 1st next year and both Duchene and Karlsson are pending ufa’s.
Are they going to go for it or get assets for Karlsson and Duchene while gifting their high pick to Colorado?

Didn't Selanne and Kariya take small dollar contracts to play together in Colorado?

How so?
Who does Vancouver have that rivals Eichel's potential?
Who does Vancouver have that rivals Dahlin's potential?
Mittelstadt, Reinhart, Nylander, Ullmark. There's a lot of young players there with still high potential that don't need to be the next big thing with the Sabres.
Horvat, Broesser, Petersson and Juolevi (without even having to insult them) don't hold much of a candle to the young group. And they now have the expectation to carry on them the back of the team with the Sedins gone.
Veterans O'Reilly, Okposo and Ristolainen compare favourable to the veteran leadership of the Canucks including Edler and uh...hmmm, Sam Gagner still signed?

Petterson is on par with Middelstat if not better.
At the end of the day you clinger to the wrong piece. They are both dumpster fire organizations that likely have little chance of signing Tavares. No point in debating it neither team is appealing and the last thing I want is 3 pages of replies debating the crappy Canucks the shatty Sabres

- Playing near home without the scrutiny
- Uncle is/was a local star with the lacrosse team
- Up and coming roster
- Will draft 1OA and get elite defenseman
- Buffalo willing to spend big $$$

Calgary gave him the highest offer, or at least was tied (after Tanguay's injuries his offers were skimpy). No doubt Iginla was part of the decision, but I don't think he was the main part. After all, Tanguay had previously requested a trade out of Calgary.

Bertuzzi did as I recalled him saying Jarome was the main reason he signed. Tanguay was traded for the first time and the second time he likely looked at Calgary as his best chance for a payday and he wasn’t wrong

In both examples (Tanguay, Bertuzzi) that's not playing with your buddy, that's wanting to play with one of the top players in the NHL at the time (though as pointed out, Tangs was also familiarity & lack of other offers on his 2nd go around).

McKenzie on his latest podcast says the Sabres are asking for a similar return for ROR that the Flyers got for Mike Richards.
Richards got the Flyers a 22 year old Simmonds, 19 year old Brayden Schenn, and a 2nd round pick.
Says they are essentially looking for a good young player under 27, a top prospect, and a significant pick.
Mentioned Montreal and Canes as possible destinations.
Also said Tavares will probably impact the trade value.

Was that "we're buddies" or "I want to play with that guy - he's awesome"? If the former, I didn't know they were close off-ice beforehand.

So would the Flames offer be Bennett, Fox, 2nd?
Unfortunately we don’t have the comparable pieces.

And? Even if we go with that, don't we end up something like:
Eichel>>Horvat
Dahlin>Broesser
Middelstat=Petersson
Reinhart>Juolevi
Nylander>??
Guhle>??
Demko is a question mark with high potential that could push everyone down for the Cnaucks but Ullmark isn't completely without potential. When it comes to goalies it's too hard to predict.
Probably the closest comparable you could make between the two teams young players is to say that Dahlen is sort of similar spelling as Dahlin.

Could be the latter all I know is Iggy was part of the recruitment and it worked. Bertuzzi was not the biggest UFA to hit the market either like Tavares.

Wayne Simmonds was drafted in 2007, and spent the 07/08 season in the OHL. He then made the jump to the NHL where he produced this:
08/09: 82GP - 23 points
09/10: 78GP - 40 points
10/11: 80GP - 30 points
and was then traded to Philly in the trade.
Wayne Simmonds is actually a great reason why the Flames shouldn't be "giving up" on Sam Bennett.
...I like ROR, but I would not give up Bennett + Fox + pick for him. Patience with youth is the way forward in my eyes.

Suter and Parise are buddies and wanted to sign with the same team the year they were both UFAs. I'm sure it didn't hurt that the Wild threw boatloads of cash at them though.
