I think we can only get mad at gate lurkers once YYC gets the times right. If the gate gets posted 90 minutes prior to departure, you can't fault for people actually doing what they're supposed to and going to the gate when it's called.

How early are people getting to the airport that they have 90 minutes to kill at the gate? Stay at home and relax for another hour people.

Yeah, but some people prefer to get there somewhat early when the next flight to Huatulco is not for another 7 days and missing it ruins your vacation. The system shouldn't break because people are coming to the airport early.

Government recommendation is to get there 1.5-2 hours before your international flight. I often get there at 2 hours early, and usually breeze through security and customs in a half hour.
But the reason I do that is because there has been the odd case of security lines well exceeding an hour. So yes, I'd rather be at the gate 90 minutes early 90% of the time than being at the gates later and missing my flight 10% of the time.

Yup I'd rather spend an extra hour at the airport than risk missing my flight.

A few years ago we sat at a table in the GlobalFest beer gardens and another couple joined us. The girl was a flight attendant. We ended up having a good time. The best story was her telling us about the "crop dusting" games the flight attendants play. The story and story telling had us laughing pretty hard.

This is moving a bit from the terminal discussion, but regarding charging for carry-on luggage, United appears to be moving that direction - at least for the low fare peons...

I used to be a last minute arriver. Never missed a flight. But nowadays I kinda like getting there a couple hours early, taking my time, getting a beer and a bite to eat and catching up on some internet on my iPad.

A lot of the discount carriers advertise super cheap rates then charge you for carry ons.

I think I already told this story here, but back in August I went to Vegas and showed up at the airport 2.5 hours before my flight. I had to run to the gate to make my plane. They were calling people all over the place for that flight, so I wasn't the only one.
I'd like to not get there early, but I can't trust that I will make my flight if I do.

I'm early. There's always the possibility of a gate change that you miss, very long security lines, or other malfunctions that make you have to rush to reschedule.
The bottom floor of the terminal (when deplane) is very bland. Almost feels like a hospital. And the walk to customs is just as long as the old one. And there is no bathroom until you actually reach customs. I'd like to see one closer to the end of the terminal.

Oh, I guarantee it was considered. They just expected people would meekly go buy water at the shops.
Based on the location of the water stations, I would expect they tapped into the water lines.

The article quotes someone who travels to London and says when he gets off the plane he wants to fill his bottle up. Can't do that at YYC. When you land you go through customs and there are no water fountains or filling stations there.

The obvious and predictable reaction to that is that people are racing to board as early/quickly as possible, in order to gain adequate over-head space.
And that turns boarding into a ####show.
Stop charging for checked luggage (well, one bag at least) and the problem goes away.
|
On top of this, everyone knows that if they run out of space in the plane they will put the bag underneath for free.
