I hate Shaw. Hate is a strong word but I really do hate this company.

Switching my Dad to Shaw mobile. He rarely uses his phone and never uses data. Virgin was pillaging him 37 dollars a month for basically having 30 mins talk a month and no texting.

And more so score me so many important brownie points...

My parents have had shaw 75 for years now, I went to the store with them and ported over their mobile phone and home phone number to 2 $0 plans, no issues, no need to re-up their internet plan.

So, this $0 Shaw deal works out to about an $8.75 savings per month as opposed to getting that. If you have to pay more to get to that level of Internet to get it for free (and don't need the upgraded Internet), it's more economical to just get the Freedom plan.
|
But also the Shaw deal is $10/GB that is good for 90 days, while Freedom is $15/GB good for 30 days. So for low GB users like my parents, they will be paying $3.33/mo instead of $15/mo with Freedom. Now we're talking about $20 savings per month. And they didn't actually have to upgrade their internet at all, the same 75 plan they have had for years.

It would be a killer options for my parents, but alas they are in Manitoba and the service isn't available there.
I suppose I could just get a phone put on my account and send it to them since Canada-wide calling is free, but they'll be stuck with a 587 number.

If Shaw sets up a self-service online porting feature you could try that. That's how I got the classic Koodo Saskatchewan only deal years ago while keeping my 403 number

XB6 Modem...I've seen insinuations that it may have the ability to be a smart hub (for Z-wave, zigbee, etc.)? Is that actually possible, and if so, how?
For the present, I'm just looking to connect a couple of Kwikset 910 locksets, but I'm sure we'll have some more Z-wave devices soon. Already have several google home devices, nest, and a bunch of lights all working through wifi/google home app, but planning to automate even more.

Switched from Shaw to Teksavvy in January. Was happy to pay $64.95/month for their 150 service.
Unfortunately, that jumped to $69.95 a few months ago and will go up again on October 1 to $79.95 based on a recent federal court decision. Lame.

Glad I locked in with Shaw directly at $68/mo for Internet 300 for 2 years. Looks like I won't be able to use the "I'm switching to Teksavvy" line during the next negotiation

I'll probably end up switching to Lightspeed 300 for $70/month.
But I'd pay $80 just to avoid Shaw.

A couple months in, has anyone switched to Shaw Mobile? How does the coverage in the city seem to be?

I switched my kids over on the weekend from Koodoo pay and talk- Went to Southcentre, took about 20 or so minutes total. Put the sims in and they started working immediately- no issues so far.

I switched over a month or so ago. No issues at all but I don’t go far these days and I’m not a heavy user of data or airtime.

I have my kids on Shaw mobile too. Haven't had any issues yet, coverage seems to be fine in the city.

Has anyone had any luck with Shaw retentions lately? A couple of years ago I got a smokin’ deal on 300 internet, small TV (for the Flames), and home phone (old alarm) for $100/month. I am starting to get renewal messages and $100 will only get me internet, and $170 will get me what I currently have, and that’s not going to happen.
I have always flirted with the idea of TekSavvy, but would have to then add-on Sportsnet Online for hockey (or go to the dark side), and I’d still need a landline or a new alarm.
I suppose that I could switch to Telus if they have some good promotions. But Shaw internet is steady in my area and I have no complaints aside from the potential price.
Has anyone else renewed lately and not felt violated afterwards?

There is no more retentions. You threaten to quit and they say ok.

This is incorrect.
You just have to work really hard and ask for retention.
I was able to get my dad to 130 dollars for total tv, high speed 300,and a cell phone.
