Do you think home/away is going to make any difference this year?
Curious as to what you guys think home/away records will be like this year. Is it still going to be the same where the home record is quite a bit better than the away record in general? Or are no fans going to make the records pretty equivalent.. How important is the being in your home city / getting last change etc.

The fans factor is out the window this year for sure. However last change can help coaches get the matchups they want. Maybe the difference in win % between home and away gets a bit closer this year, but not by much and it wouldn't be something many people notice without looking for it.

I'm curious about this as well.
Less "distractions" on road trips from having to be diligent about covid and with some of these back to back series-like games, it will allow the road team to get into a routine much easier than in a normal year.

I do, yes. The more familiar you get with the other team, and the more often you play them, the more things like line matching matter.
The flip side is that there are a LOT of double headers. And like we saw with VAN/EDM, they often end in splits.

Unlike the NFL and other sports where the fans create the only advantage @ home (outside familiarity with arena/stadium), NHL has some rules that benefit the home team .. so yes home still matters
though there are definitely some factors to this year from covid protocols and back-to-backs that can be out of the teams hands...

Over a 5 year span from 2011-2012 to 2015-2016 the home team had a winning percentage of 54.5% if anyone is curious.
Over the same time:
MLB: 53.4%
NFL: 56.9%
NBA: 59.0%

If Willy is given permission to ROCK the dome with music and fan noise we have one of the best in the business performing to the players to motivate them like we were actually there.

This could be for the Flames, as I think they sometimes struggle when there is too much juice in the building.

Then they'll never do well in the playoffs. Home or road.

i'm wondering if the fans (or lack of) have any effect on the reffing?
any chance that stuff gets called more strictly (especially on the home team) becuz there are no home fans to boo the refs? i'd like to think 'no' but who knows
i agree that having last change is a big deal and lets the home team get the line match ups they want

Just based on last change, familiarity with arena and sleeping in your own bed should give a slight advantage.
Although I do agree there are *potentially* less distractions on the road, their is fatigue from travelling plus staying in a hotel bed vs home bed.
It will be interesting to see the stats at the end of the year.

Home ice is still an advantage. You get your family and a home to go. Last change, board play familiarity. Yeah, home ice advantage still applies. Just missing the fans.

I think reffing is slightly affected. During the playoffs I think a ref or former ref commented that they don't feel pressured to make a call because they don't have fans yelling at them. I think stats were checked and there was a slight change but nothing to sneeze at. I'm going off of memory though. I'm sure somebody around here can remember this and know where to look into the details.

Still a matchup advantage. You put out your 4th line to start period 2 on the road you're gonna get a hurt real bad.
