Babos takes the opening set 6-4 - Some fine tennis from Bianca, needs to up that first serve percentage however.

You certainly get your money's worth tomorrow if you've got a grandstand ticket for afternoon play in Montreal. Main stadium is not too shabby either.

I know Genie is frustrated, but those comments today sure make her sound like a loser. Her attitude and work ethic are her problem, not the spotlight she is under. She should ask Federer and Nadal what a spotlight actually feels like.

Just heard her comments, yikes.

When asked about Bianca Andreescu, after praising her nicely, said something along the lines of "I can pass the torch and maybe she can carry the burden of Canada" not an exact quote but it was along those lines.

I'm sure she didn't quite intend that as it came off, but once her frustration dies down she will probably regret how she worded that.

I know her biggest endorsement company Pinty Foods is already really unhappy with her, a stupid comment like this is probably all they need to get he ball rolling on dumping her.

That was pretty much an exact quote as well. She actually said to
Give the burden of Canada to someone else.

Goodness, if Canada is a burden, can you imagine what it would be like playing for the likes of China, Russia or other countries?

Being a Canadian athlete is a walk in the park compared to the scrutiny others feel.

No doubt it was said in the heat of the moment, but...

^^She's kinda signed with Nike (and a few others) and even this year has still been the non-Serena face of their women's adverts, so Pinty's is not her biggest sponsor, just her most annoying sponsor. The reality is she never had great game to begin with, and she's done nothing to improve it. She had great mental toughness at the start, which takes you a long way in the women's game (see: Maria). Once that left her she's basically been first round fodder, 18 times now since the start of last year out in the first round. Still think it was that Montreal debacle that broke her more than losing to Kvitova, but regardless what did break her it was the beginning of the end for her.

Yikes,

A quote like that will kill your sponsorship for the rest of your career.

Stupid stupid comment to make

Got their moneys worth tonight too, heck of an effort by Schwartzman and a bit of a choke for Thiem.

And late as it may be, still gotta say Happy Birthday to the old man. It's Felix's birthday as well, and for fun the age gap is 19 years.

I gave up on Genie long ago; it's pretty obvious that she's too inconsistent to leave any tangible impression on tennis. Lowered expectations will lead to less disappointment. She's just not that good.

Here's hoping for better things from Abanda, who at least seems to have a more positive disposition.

Got suite tickets to the women's semifinal on Saturday, hopefully I'll recognize the names.

As others have pointed out as well, it's a clear indication that she is not able to compete at the tour level of tennis right now. Confidence aside, if you view representing your country as a "burden" you shouldn't even be showing up for the event at all....its embarrassing for fans and her.

Its time for her to consider whether she should be doing this for a career at all anymore at this point before it gets really ugly.

Starting to look like Thiem may be going down the same path as last year. His game has fallen off a cliff since the clay season ended.

I think people hoped like hell 2014 wasn't just lightning in a bottle because people love a hot tennis star.

When she began her struggles, people brushed it off as a slump. When it was prolonged, it was the pressure. People kept hoping and hoping for a hot tennis star. If she wasn't attractive, she would have quickly faded into oblivion after 2014. The spectacle is actually sad at this point. She's never going to be anything, yet networks and fans have all sorts of high expectations for the poor girl. She's not good at tennis.

I think we have to remember that it is the WTA tour and with Serena currently out of the picture, there really is no dominant player on the tour these days. That said, there's no denying that Genie's game has fallen off a cliff and it's doubtful at this point that she can make any kind of positive impact on the WTA tour. I did see an interview with her last night where she said that she has a full schedule of tournaments remaining this season that she's planning to play, but I'm not sure if that's both WTA and ITF tournaments.

it would have to be ITF tournaments where she would be seeded because there would be nothing worse for Genie than if she tried to qualify for a WTA event, failed and then had the entire week off.

Schwartzman reminds me of a young Lleyton Hewitt, dude gets everything back and looks like he can run for days.
