K.O.D. donairs are amazing.

Not sure if you can get real donairs in Calgary but nothing like grabbing one drunk after the bar in Pizza Corner (which sadly I think just has one pizza shop on it now).

Try one. You'll be happy.

King of Donairs from Halifax.
Worth a try?

I have only ever had one donair. I did not like it.
OHMYGODYES!!

How I miss drunken 3am KOD.

Calgary donairs are NOTHING like Haliafx donairs. Completely different things. The only Halifax donairs I have seen in Calgary are at The Below Deck Tavern and The Trap and Gill.

Plus KOD's pizza is awesome, too.

King of Donairs is ok. If you can't wait for them though, head to Donair on the Run in Cochrane. It's a little hole in the wall that's easy to miss, but is as close to a real "East Coast" donair as I've seen in Alberta.

Went to Anew Table on Saturday, was excellent. Portions were on the small side, but I found the 5 course with wine paring a good value at $100. Absolutely would go back.

Yup, absolutely delicious donair out there. My wife and I frequent very often. I won't bother waiting in the lines for KOD when I can go there and walk in and out.

How does this work for the participating restaurants (gourmet ones specifically)? You just make a reservation and the gourmet menu will be an option, or do you have to call and say you want a reservation for big taste menu?

edit- and anyone have recommendations on choices for the gourmet menu ones? Teatro essentially looks to be half price from their normal set menu.

Anyone know how many grams of meat those oversized donairs usually are? I want an uncle moe's donair but I'm skipping lunch today so I'll be wanting a behemoth donair. Usually when I'm this hungry I get the T-Rex donair at Pita Stop in Canyon Meadows or the Jumbo from Pita Grill in Riverbend.

I see that they have a customer special that is 300 Grams of beef. I think that should be good?

The menu will be available. No need to reserve the menu or call in advance.

A friend I know writes a blog in town. Much of it is local restaurants. She just did a post on the big taste and her favourites:

Just to keep the universe in balance, we thought it was terrible. The home-made bread was the best thing going. The food was entirely mediocre and forgetable. We will never go back.

Pita Stop is great. Highly underrated. Another really good South spot is Donair Grill in Bridlewood. Best chicken shwarma I have ever had.

So I did go to Uncle Moes and got the 400 gram beef donair. Perfect amount of meat but one major complaint and that is that they'll make you a donair with 400G of beef but they keep the amount of veggies and sauce the same as a normal donair. WTF? You end up tasting nothing but the beef.

Won't be going again.

As for Pita Stop, yup I love it. Also like Donair Place by the old Zellers in Shawnessy.

Why don't you just try the one with less beef instead of never going again? If it overpowered the rest of the ingredients, is it really the perfect amount of meat?

You don't think it's a bit cheap to only increase the amount of beef and nothing else? I didn't just add extra beef, I paid for their special extra loaded donair.

Well yeah, but maybe they think that people just want more meat. Did you tell them that they should add more of the other toppings too? Because I'm betting a large portion of customers who order crazy meat donair just want extra meat.

It seems a little harsh to never go back because of something that could be improved with a small amount of communication.

I'm not much of a donair person, but when I have a craving, I go to Pita Stop which is my local. I've always thought it was good, but not great. Again, I don't have much to compare it too. I tend to have them pretty plain though, not much sauce. What am I missing out on? For you guys who eat from Pita Stop, what should I be asking for in my donair?

I love their fries though. Sometimes they overdo it on the seasoning, but most of the time, they get it just right.

Me personally I get it as is but I usually get the garlic sauce instead of sweet sauce and also add cheese.
