My favorite part of the movie was when Sybok tries to take away Kirk's trauma/pain and he says I need my pain that's what makes me who I am (or something like that). Powerful line. The whole scene was very well done.

If you read Shatner's book when he talked about making that movie, his ideas were oscar worthy and he was failed by the studio and their reluctance to give him money, and the incompetence of the special effects people.

When you consider the Kirk storyline in Star Trek VI, that line in Star Trek V was inadvertently a brilliant piece of foreshadowing.
[Dictating his personal log] Captain James T. Kirk: Captain's log, stardate 9522.6: I've never trusted Klingons, and I never will. I could never forgive them for the death of my boy. It seems to me our mission to escort the Chancellor of the Klingon High Council to a peace summit is problematic at best. Spock says this could be an historic occasion, and I'd like to believe him, but how on earth can history get past people like me?
Captain James T. Kirk: They're animals. Captain Spock: Jim, there is an historic opportunity here. Captain James T. Kirk: Don't believe them. Don't trust them. Captain Spock: They're dying. Captain James T. Kirk: Let them die!
[pauses... Spock cocks his head in surprise. Kirk recoils and proceeds] Captain James T. Kirk: Has it occurred to you that this crew is due to stand down in three months? We've done our bit for king and country! You should have trusted me.

I think that Star Trek VI stands out besides the solid story and it was a great story, was the casting.
What made wrath of Khan great was a powerful villian. TSFS was great because of Christopher Lloyd.
In Star Trek VI you look at what they could play off of. Christopher Plumber, Kim Katrell, Brock Peters, Rosana Desoto. All really powerful actors. They also got back to the tightly bound crew concept that had been missing in Star Trek V.

I think that was one of the biggest weaknesses of V if I'm honest. Not just the ludicrous 'God' plot or Spocks never-before-spoken-of half brother (Sarek you hound you!!) but the fact that it was essentially a '3-Musketeers' adventure.
I have nothing against a Kirk, Spock and Bones story, in an episode, but for the whole movie?
IV was a team effort to locate Nuclear Wessels and a couple whales...I guess...and VI was a team effort to thwart a coup designed to start a war.
Thats one of Star Trek's great advantages, everyone is important.
Look at the VAST difference between STD with Saint Michael and Strange New Worlds.
One is Star Trek and one sucks the big one.
Why do people love Lower Decks? Its not just because of Easter Eggs or memberberries or Dr. Miggleemo (<-although hes up there) its because it emphasizes the importance of all the Starfleet officers.
V basically wrote them all out. It exchanged the entire crew for a pair of Jet Boots.

Plus the whole reason Disco went with St Michael is Spock's half-sister is because "but Spock doesn't mention his family or talk about himself! Look at Sybok!"
Speaking of which early reviews of first few episodes of Disco are out there and it does really sound like...Disco. Every new season is a course correction from something. heh.

I never had any intention of watching them, so I'm not too bothered.

Yeah, considering its the last year, I'm not all that invested anymore.
I expect that at the end of the last episode, Michael will be promoted to Grand Admiral of all the Federation, then in the epilogue we'll see her winning the election to become president and all her friends will tell her how awesome she is.
then hopefully the Q continuum barfs rainbows and destroys the universe.
