I assume Rittich is going to be getting the call with the possibility a trade is in the works. Wouldn’t be opposed to bringing back Chad.

Too bad Lack didn’t work out but there was a high % chance that was going to occur

... ok, why does Brad Treliving need to watch two BUF games (in which he is not guaranteed to even see him play) before trading for Chad Johnson? He got to watch many many games and many many practices last year.

Now, I'm not saying that he won't trade for Johnson... but if he does it almost certainly had almost nothing to do with him scouting the Sabre games.

If Eddie Lack clears waivers & is sent to the AHL, only $350K of the $1.375M cap hit the #Flames are responsible for will hit their salary cap. The other $1.375M retained by Carolina as part of the trade, will continue to count in full against the #Hurricanes cap regardless.
Haha.......

IMO it seems there is something going on with Lack beyond just performance (as poor as it has been).

This job was his to lose and he may have done just that in spectacular fashion, and in a very short period of time.

Whatever this is a prelude to, and it may be nothing more than a guy needing to reset in the AHL, I sure hope whomever comes up from Stockton can play and give Smith a break when needed. Starting this weekend.

Totally Random, probably not fair, but I felt like typing something out.
Personally, Kane being in Buffalo isn't far enough away from Calgary for my liking.

Kane is not going to sign for 5.5. He will be looking at 7-8 mil a year.

Definitely interesting news. I didn't expect the Flames to really make a move in net for a while yet, as Lack did look really good in St. Louis, and then terrible (with the entire team) in Detroit.

Might just be a conditioning stint, however, a demotion, a trade... will be interesting. With Treliving scouting Buffalo so much, it does make you wonder if Johnson was indeed being looked at at being brought back or not. You would think that Treliving has the book on him, but maybe he wanted to see how Johnson was playing right this moment.

Heck, might even be part of a big upcoming trade. Who knows?

edit: Can't be a conditioning stint. Don't need waivers to send players for a conditioning stint.

Probably need to add a 1st and prospect at least. Kane will get a kings ransom this season. I don't think Brouwer retained and Lack get you Johnson.

I don't think they're necessarily giving up on Lack but I do think that he needs some playing time to work out his game. However, that's not going to happen with Calgary so I have no issue with him getting a couple of starts in the AHL. Bring up Rittich and maybe give him a shot against Colorado?

P.S. I'm a solid no on bringing back Johnson. Maybe at the deadline if everyone else falters.

Well, it seems like a distrust in Lack's ability wasn't just a fear on CP.

This looks like the right move. I suppose it's still very possible Lack stays up for now.

Lack isn't playing enough, my bet this is nothing more than sending him down to get some games in and get back into the groove in a situation where the stakes aren't nearly as high.

Meanwhile, one of the younger goalies (who have been playing on a regular basis) can come up and play a game or two in the NHL and give the team a better chance to win without Smith in net.

I'd be shocked if Chad Johnson isn't a flame by the end of this week.

I'm curious: what happens if somebody claims him? Are they on the hook for his whole salary or just the portion Calgary is paying (with Carolina paying the rest)?

Probably was scouting Evander Kane and/or Sam Reinhart, and saw the Carolina game where Johnson played while doing so.

Re: Johnson
I wouldn't be shocked, the team knows him and he was well liked. My issue is that from January last year up until well, now, he has been bad. I get that he saved the Flames season. But can't we call that what it was? A hot streak that occurred when the Flames needed it most. Consistency was not there after that, and hasn't returned. Still, he probably has the trust of players and coaches/management so I guess we'll see.

Edit: I too would rather see a call up than a trade

I'll guess that Lack passes through waivers and then is traded to a team in desperate need of a goalie but then that team sends him down and calls someone else up.

I'd much rather the Flames bring up Rittich. Why give up assets when you potentially have an equal goalie in the minors right now.

I agree with this. I don't want them to spend any assets on a new backup.
