Default Yost: Grading each team's blue line depth

https://www.tsn.ca/travis-yost-gradi...epth-1.1834978

Yost with some very positive things to say about the Flames blueline -- including that it's the deepest in the league. He notes that Valimaki will slot in for Tanev while he recovers, which probably isn't accurate.

I thought I'd heard something about Tanev likely being ready to start the season.

Anyway, yeah, it won't be Valimaki. Better chance of them just signing Michael Stone and slotting him in.

Also calls Tanev a "depth" defenseman which is just wildly inaccurate.

Well he won't be in Tanev's spot on the roster but he might get the slot.

I think it would really depend on what (if anything) the Flames do with the rest of the offseason. My guess would be that that either Valimaki or Meloche slots in (assuming that there is cap space and Valimaki isn't traded or anything).

It really is amazing looking around the league and seeing how just about every other team has a massive holes in their defence. On paper the Flames defence looks incredible (said that before).

If the Flames can get a more production out of their forward prospects and depth, they are looking like a really great team.

Realistically & objectively bottom 3.

Each d-man is slotted 2 positions higher than they should be. And that's just because there's no better talent to push them down.

I think Valimaki needs to play more than anything. Much like Kylington who I think plays more physically. But Valimaki certainly has abilities and skill to play regularly at the NHL level.

You'd think the 9.5 million dollar man would get a mention here, but nope. No good

I wouldn't hate Tanev taking his time coming back and getting a couple weeks of Juuso in just to see how that goes. Does he elevate? I'd like to see.

I would take any of the "Tier 5" bluelines over the Oilers and not saying that because oilers are no good (which they are not).

Oilers in the "solid" category. LOL

Also centre depth. Also goaltending. Johnny signed a 7 year deal with 0 intention of playing the playoffs for at least the first 4 years. But he lives close to his aunt in law or something.

Their forward core is loaded with guys who are known for awful defence yet always "focusing on their defensive game". Last year they were 5th last in GA, and it's not going to get better.

And Kyllington as top four makes no sense.

It is the one thing lost on the haters who have said Calgary will be worse by being down 1 100+or player from last year is how they replaced a third pairing shutdown D with a top pairing guy who excels at both ends of the ice.

Going back many years, it still worries me when people say the Flames have among the best defense in the league.
