Oh, right, ummmm… the fragile male ego? social media? a regression of family values, Black Lives Matter or something? the mainstream media, shock jock radio, you know, all that stuff or whatever.
If you can say all those things while sounding like a Letterkenny resident, we might have a gig for you as a Jordan Peterson impersonator.

I was touched on here, but the American 'cult of the gun' is unique to America. Firing a gun is romanticized, owning one and brandishing one is considered a sign of strength and not weakness, firepower and concealability are put on a pedestal and marketed to adults and children, the myth that they are used for defense is ingrained, federal and state laws are moronic, and restriction of any kind are almost non existent.
But you are right, gun control is only part of the problem, it is just the easiest to solve.
There is also the erosion of democracy, the PACs, superPACs, lobbies and corruption serve no one except for the elected officials who are paid off. They should be eliminated, but won't for the obvious reason.
Extreme religion and cult mentality are out of control. Shysters preying on the disenfranchised and weak, and are allowed to do so under a constitution that is way to old to be relevant anymore, but is held as gospel.
The wealth disparity is creating a peasant class with no generational chance to move up in status. Upward mobility is rare, but commercialized as common. The administration and aristocracy will kill millions of their own citizens before allowing this to change. Occupy was the last and only chance outside of revolution.
Really the only actionable response in the States is gun control. You can address the other problems publicly, but their is zero chance that anything will be done about anti-democracy, cults or the aristocratic class.

Saw an article a while back about the federal excise tax on firearms. Why not push for an increase on the existing handgun tax and introduce a big one for all of the AR platforms? Surely that would start to put a dent in supply.

Sure it would work.
But do you think anyone in the GOP would publicly support that measure?
Good luck getting that past the Senate Republicans.
Matthew McConaughey gave a live statement at the WH press briefing on the Uvalde shooting given he is a Texan and also went to Uvalde to grieve with families. I know he's a celebrity and some like to automatically discount anything any celebrity says (not sure why), but I thought it was a strong statement and just another example of someone using their platform to try and get through to the idiots in DC.

Also rumoured to potentially run for governor of Texas.
"Is it a basic human right to defend one's life by any means necessary?" It's been long established in our legal system that you can. So if the answer to that is yes, why is it not a right to defend yourself with a firearm, especially if your attacker has one and is willing to use it against you?
Gun rights are human rights predominantly because self-defense is embedded in your right to live. You have a right to self-defense and every reasonable means to enforce that right.

The net effect on your right to life from the presence of guns is negative.

If you have children and you own a gun, the gun most likely to shoot your child is yours. Sobering. You'd think that would keep guns out of peoples homes, but nope.

Wrong. Bring facts next time.

Really? I believe our courts and laws disagree.
If your life is threatened, yes it is. It's well established.
If you shoot and kill someone who doesnt have a gun themselves the courts will usually send your arse to jail, you are allowed to defend yourself using appropriate force but you are also legally required to do everything you can to avoid using force including running away, there are very few circumstances where using lethal force is considered justified and putting a cap in a guy is almost never one of them
I wish that people who pretended guns were all about sport/hunting/etc for them accidentally admitting that they also value guns for their ability to kill other people was at least slightly less surprising.
I respect real hunters, but damn if I don’t find pathetic nerds who own a gun to cover for their inferiority complex one of the saddest things around.
