It sprinkled briefly while we were downtown at the Korean festival.

Can't believe how nice July & Aug have been after such a mild June.

Perhaps it's recency bias, but I'm born and (mostly) raised here, and I can't recall a sustained heatwave here like this before. Looks like it's going to be exactly like this right through the end of August.
I seem to recall very dry years in the late 70’s and 80’s. It was not unusual for Calgary to be brown in August. The last decade has seen much greener summers than I recall.

Nice to be out of the smoke too!

So did smoke just roll in or is my neighbourhood on fire?

I don’t smell any smoke. The moon has a cool orangey glow though.

I recall working in the late 90's for a company that had a Vancouver branch and one of the guys there always used to make fun of Calgary's brown grass in the summer. The city has always had a semi-arid climate.

Looks like it has arrived. City is fairly clear, but I can't see the mountains anymore from my office window. Can see about 5km west of the city into the Tsuutina and then its a wall of smoke.

This is going to get worse. Endless heat and no rain has consequences.

Expecting that we'll need this, but hoping that we won't. Here is the smoke forecast site:

https://firesmoke.ca/forecasts/current/

Note that times are UTC (so subtract 6 hours to get Calgary time).

Man, that one radium fire is just terribly situated.

It's one blaze but it's in precisely the right spot to smog up a number of nice hiking viewpoints depending on the direction of the wind.

Just need the LL area relatively smoke free over the next couple weeks. I want to do a couple early morning hikes and catch the sunrise on camera.

Don't #### it up fires!

So is this smoke right now then? I can still see to the horizon from my balcony, but the sun just feels tinted and not at full force. I'm even feeling a bit chilly on my balcony right now, which is something I haven't been able to say in a while this summer at this hour..

I guess that probably means the answer is yes, it just doesn't really look like it is all. Or at least how I remember it last summer on smoky days.

Smoke was very localized today. Was concentrated south of the highway while north of it was completely clear.

Then the south side cleared up after dinner and it was close to normal again.

Not like the smoke last year which was much more widespread, which probably had a lot to do with having 10x as many sources.

Personally I think the weather this summer has been unreal. One of the best I can remember actually.
