There are probably lots of places to find info on this on the internet, but since a software unlock is "grey", you might only get answers through PM.
You should be able to call Fido and see if you meet the requirements for them to complete a factory unlock on the phone - though it usually comes with a $50 fee.

You are correct, they do do it for 50dollars. I'm wondering what the grey market method is.....
If someone could kindly help.
Thanks,

Do a google for unlock iPhone 5. It will give you the info you need. The Mods for the site here will not allow us to discuss these methods.
There is a high likelihood that the unlocks available will be tethered. This means you have to connect your iPhone the computer that your iPhone is sync'd to any time you want to reboot the phone.
I'd echo SilentSim's opinion. Pay the $50 and have fido do a proper unlock.

There's no jailbreak unlock for the iPhone 5. Only Gevey sim's and that crap I believe.

I've not looked at it in a long time. I'm on an S3 now, but when I used my iPhone as more than an iPod, I paid Telus to unlock it for me. More than worth not having the headache of a tethered unlock or wondering if you were going to brick your phone.

Had an idea!

Like others have said, pay the $50 to unlock it properly.

try searchin redmondpie for it, but i don't think there is an unlock for it. It all depends on the baseband, and i'm 90% sure that the previous unlocking methods have all been patched by apple. your best bet is fido, and if not, picking up an unlocked iphone 4 from kijiji. let us know what happens/happened with fido, as i'm curious if they actually do it/charge $50 for it.

Not only will the Fido unlock be a lot easier, it will also improve the resale value of your phone if you choose to upgrade anytime soon. Carrier unlocked phones are usually highly sought after.

Does anyone know the criteria for a carrier unlock from Fido? It used to be that they would only do it if you had fully completed your contract.
I'm mid-contract, and although I had jailbroken and unlocked my old 3G for travel purposes, that device has met a slightly untimely end on my tile floor. I don't have any immediate plans to travel, but it would be good to know for future reference for my primary phone (a 4s).

Given the high cost of roaming (don't get me started on that), the low cost of pay-as-you go sims/plans in other countries, and the slight hassle of carrying around two phones, this is a no brainer for anyone leaving the country that needs to stay connected. $50 is about the equivalent of checking your email twice or making a one-minute phone call.
To necho the others in this thread: just pay the $50 instead of trying to do it yourself.

Nice! I feel like doing it now, just because I can. But knowing my luck, I'll unlock it and then something will happen to my phone before I have a chance to use it on vacation!
I'll definitely be doing this before I travel next.
