What, the trailer? I'm confused. How do you watch a trailer "live"?
They live streamed the Star Wars Celebrations panel with JJ Abrams and the cast. Hosted by Colbert. At the end they showed the audience/streamers the trailer.
After it was posted to YouTube.

Looks like wreckage of either the original Death Star or the one that was under construction in ROTJ.
Could be either, though the cool part for me is if that was Endor and the destruction of the Death Star 2 created a environmental catastrophe that wiped out the Ewoks, and the evil new republic sat back in orbit and ate popcorn as the world died.
There's lots to process in a short amount of time which is good.
The Palpatine laughter, I love Palpatine but I'm hoping he isn't back because it lays waste to the OT where Anakin bought balance to the force and wiped out the Sith.
My preference would be that Kylo Ren found the Telos Holocron and gained Sith knowledge from Palpatine.
I'd prefer at this point that Ren remains the primary villain and objective and we don't get another Greivous.

the Knights of Ren as they've shown up in filming which is good to me. But I'd love to see Ren as more of a Palpatine figure and his continued attempts to bring Rey in as his apprentice. We know there's always going to be that moment of temptation for the hero, its happened in every trilogy.
Maybe the Palpatine moment is going to be a flash back to the past. There were reasons why they wanted a flashback to Vader at some point

I don't know about universally, but it's the only Star Wars movie I've only watched once. I'm still gonna go see IX on opening day if I can, but man did VIII really leave me with nothing.

I think a lot of the issues with TLJ come from the fact that people were hoping for some depth on certain things, ie. Who is Snoke? Why is Rey so special? who are her parents? All the stuff that was teased in TFA.
Instead we get Rian Johnson telling us Snoke is irrelevent, Rey is a nobody, and don't get me started on the whole Finn/Rose story line which was pretty much pointless.

Star Wars fans want backstory, the one thing that really helped with the OT and the PT was that there was this massive lore that was created outside of the movies.
With the new movies, I would have to say that the new EU has been pretty dismal.
The minute that we saw Snoke die stupidly you heard the sound of a million Star Wars fans screaming in agony before going quiet.
When we found out from Ren that Rey's parents were drunks who sold her for drinking money it was just worse. It made the movie seem paper thin.
For as much as people disliked the PT, the one thing I loved is that there were a lot of things happening in the background behind the scenes. Palpatine was in AOTC for like 5 minutes, but he was a huge character in that movie because he was moving chess pieces in the background. You didn't get a sense of that in TLJ, because of that it became a bit sterile.
The other thing that we don't need in the final movie is that forced attempts at humor to break up the tension.
Make this movie as tense as you can. Make it as dark as you can. Make it feel like everything can be lost and the hero's could end up dead.
