This "for what it's worth" from Admiral Plain Vanilla is starting to really grind my gears. Rittich is the starter for this team. He's a top ten goalie statistically in the league.
Wills, for whatever reason, has a love for Mike Smith that is irrational and does not line up with Smith's contributions in the past calendar year. He makes little comments like this all the time on twitter and the radio.
Even this morning, the guys on the Fan were completely embarrassing. Warrener with the hot takes about Flames goal tending not being good enough, despite the fact that the Flames aren't even in the conversation for top spot in the West without Rittich. Completely disingenuous. Then they follow that up with the "well if we'd won, it wouldn't have been about Rittich today." If that's the case, then why are we talking about it at all? How about we talk about the Flames forwards rifling the puck repeatedly into Marktstom's chest instead of picking a corner. Or Monahan firing a puck on a 2 on 1 into the corner (of the boards, not the net).
You know who's #1 in the league this season in goals saved above expectation? Rittich. He has had a couple rough games statistically lately, no question. But with the exception of that Kane goal against SJ, I really don't have any issue with anything else he's let in. Flames as a team have been really bad defensively since before the All Star Break, but it was masked by Johnny scoring 2+ points per game. He's slowed down, and all of a sudden we seem mortal again as a team.
Let's mix in some defensive commitment. Guaranteed it will result in better goal tending.

I thought the second goal was bad, but was sitting right behind Rittich when Boeser scored. Gaudreau in the third period took a shot with less time on an identical setup from the same spot that Markstrom stopped, and it was easily the save of the game.
I was one of the people complaining that shot went in. That's not to say it wasn't a great shot, which it was. Pettersson made a nice rush wide on Brodie and Boeser snuck off the bench to find some empty ice.
For me it's situational... When your team is absolutely laying the boots to the opposition, you have to find a save there.

If you find a save there you count your blessings. That shot goes in most of the time on every NHL goaltender. Your expectations are simply too high.

I don't understand why shooters don't go upstairs all the time on the breakaway or shootout.
Isn't it just common sense that there is more room upstairs?

Not necessarily.
People generally look at the goalie from the camera’s point of view.
Consider if the puck had eyes, what it would see. That’s more important.
That’s why when a guy roofs it over the goalie’s shoulder beside his ear, there are a handful of folks here who think it’s a great shot and not shoddy goaltending.
When a guy is in tight, space above the glove can be reduced by moving the glove forward a bit, for example.
(This attempted management of the vertical angle is something I suspect may contribute to Smith’s bellyflopping in part, btw)
Doing it at top-speed with only fractions of seconds to navigate is even harder.
I mean yes it is but Gaudreau is more than capable. Hopefully he is getting annoyed with all these missed chances on the break away. He’s so good at creating them

Gaudreau has one of the whippiest (high flex) sticks I have ever heard of for a pro hockey player. That's great when you are loading up a wrist shot, as he likes to do. But I think it makes it harder to flip the puck up quickly at high speed IMO.
Not suggesting he needs to change, as I'm sure he knows what he is doing and he obviously isn't the strongest and most leveraged guy in the world. But there is a trade off.
The amount of hand wringing right now over Rittich is insane. He is statistically one of the best goalies in the league this year. And a borderline Vezina candidate.
The fact we haven't lost a bunch of games recently is due to his play, and our ability to convert on a larger than expected amount of chances.
By all accounts the Flames should be on a 5 or 6 game losing streak. Fortunately, it appears that they are turning it around the last couple games. Hopefully, they can have a really successful Florida road trip and get back to their winning ways.

It's considerably less cool, and players in the birdcage do take far more liberties than exposed players... but we wouldn't be playing the speed of game we are now if we didn't improve the safety of the game.
With not only the speed but the shots they're taking, these guys standing there facing the shots are insane. All I hear about as a counter to wearing one is breathing and looking dorky, but it just seems like an archaic ideology when you think of the easily avoided injuries that can happen out there.
There was a U18 game on and by the 2nd I didn't notice any longer that the players were wearing masks. It looks weird when there's only a few guys wearing one, but the first helmets were really odd-looking out there too. As far as breathing... I'll bet I'm huffing and puffing more than a pro by the end of a shift and I don't think I ever felt hindered by a couple bars.
Would be 100% on-board with players bringing masks into the NHL. My apologies for very off-topic, but I think about this all the time
Also... would high-sticking even be a penalty anymore...?
