I was hoping we could just enjoy the surprising win, but you gotta love the coaching apologists that think one game changes anything. Same problems will continue to exist. Unless we see a consistent change in the systemic failures this team has been subject to over the majority of the season this one performance doesn't change a helluva lot. Hilarious. Or was this just a an example of the players "self preparation" finally paying off?

If this is the "best" game the team can muster together under ward, that is far from encouraging.
It was a fun win, but we don't need to push some false narrative that just because the players executed, that ward's systems suddenly are good.
|
Oh noes: 23-20? To the [checks notes] top team in the division? What were the chances until the Flames went up 2-0? The Leafs were chasing all night.
And Ward’s systems are what they are - funny how execution matters.

Funny.
But I thought he was quite good. Mind you, I saw no passengers. I don’t know if they are going to try Gawdin a little more - they are sure easing him in.

Good win tonight. Flames gave effort + executed well. When it faltered (and it did - Granteed has a point there), Rittich was there to keep it out. When he was beat, the posts were there.
I think the Flames deserved to win this one, and hopefully this game will get them going again. Half of the issues right now are confidence-related IMO. I don't think effort has been a concern. I think it has been more of an execution issue, mixed with a systems issue.
Hopefully they can get the ball to start rolling. Go on a losing streak, it is hard to stop the ball from rolling against you, even if you otherwise played well. Go on a winning streak, and it is both easier to keep playing well and winning, and you end up having some stinker games that you win anyway. It looked like everyone was engaged tonight.
Markstrom + BSD are the best (maybe 2nd best) tandem in the league. It showed tonight. Rittich made some fantastic saves.
Kylington wasn't too noticeable tonight, which is a good way to start. Hope he stays in again for another game, and hopefully starts feeling more relaxed.
Beat them again on Wednesday please.

I’ve never been a fan but I was pretty impressed tonight. Seemed to be free wheeling and playing pretty loose. Impressive given his limited playing time. Only 7:46 TOI but it’s a start

You need to re-read the thread and see where the reactions are coming from. Are there apologists or people reacting to “sure they won 3-0 but....”
I swear some people are happier with “I told you so” losses.

So sad some cant enjoy what the team did and still have to blast the coaches.
Right after a win.
Against the top team in the entire NHL.

I thought the Flames dominated to their 1-0 lead and then got a big save and then went 2-0. Then the Leafs were chasing the game all night and, sure at times the Flames retreated into defence a few times, but they still skated pretty evenly with the Leafs.

Nice win. I really hope this gives some of the players the confidence going forward to continue playing well. I thought Gio and Monahan specifically were great.
I never want to see Bennett play anywhere else in the lineup besides on the RW of 13-23 for the rest of the year with the exception of moving Lindholm back to RW and Bennett to C.
I don't think the Leafs brought their best tonight and i'm still not sold on Ward.
Need to go back to back on Wednesday against these guys

It would be nice to go on a little bit of a streak here and take advantage of Ottawa to get back into the race.

Let's not forget the fans. For once, they weren't drowned out by the Leaf partisans at Scotiabank Arena.
Carlton the Bear was a decided non-factor.

I missed the first, so mostly the Flames were playing defense and not generating anything outside of the PPs.
But a shutty is always worth celebrating. It is pretty great to have your all star goalie ready to go as a backup.

Totally didn't realize the time zone they're in and came in late to see 3-0 late in the 3rd period. I had do a double take at the score. Pretty stoked BSD got the shutout in TO - the first Flames goalie to do it in TO. Monahan comes back and Flames back on track!

After all the coaches we've had and all the coaches Edmontons had as far as I'm concerned "blaming the coach" is just a lazy hockey take. No analysis behind it at all just lazy, devoid of any real sense of the game.
Its why I don't waste my time much on the most hated guy "this week" strings. Fair enough to criticize play but big name big dollar coaches aren't magic or Babcock would have brought Toronto a cup.
BTW Calgary's zone structure in their end was impeccable all night. Monahan was every bit as good as Backlund and Lindholm and was absolutely on his game defensively. Wingers trusted the Defense and Centers stayed in position and as a result break outs were better. Equally as important by holding their positions, heads on swivels they can watch the points the way they are supposed to and did. Fewer clean shots came from the TO points.
Thats what I saw but you apparantly saw a coach who needs to be fired.
