I imagine Monahan is fighting through something lower body. For the last third of the season he has been slow and easily pushed off the puck. I don't think Monahan is a speedster, but he definitely has enough speed to make some separation when he is healthy and that has been lacking.

It seems Monahan has been unlucky with being riddled with some lingering injuries to end each season... I may be remembering this correctly from past seasons??

The biggest fail was that the coaching staff seemingly had no idea of the role he was effective in on the PP in the past and kept trying to put him on the half wall on the first unit, when he probably should have been the trigger man on the second unit that actually lacks a pure shooter.

Agreed. When you look at his paltry few goals with the Flames, Brouwer most often scores as the trigger man after someone else does all the muckwork to get the puck to him. i.e.: his goal against the Sharks. Lazar and Stajan drew everyone to them, outworked their opposition and made a perfect pass right onto Brouwer's stick, unmolested in the slot for a 10 bell chance.

definitely agree with this.
He's a vet, he knows where he's supposed to be, if you can give him, like you said, a clean unmolested 10 beller, he'll finish it.
But I just don't see him creating much at all with the puck. He's had one or two nice dishes this year, but that's it. The best thing you could say about him before was he was good at screening the goalie and taking a defender on the powerplay when monahan would walk in and snipe it...but that was last year.
Brouwer problem badly needs addressing because it cascades through the lineup. Must be organizational pressure to get him in there is my only conclusion for why he gets the situational icetime he gets.

Basically, if the puck is on Brouwer's stick for longer than half a second, we have a problem.
And that's a problem.

seems oiler like that the flames let a guy with two supposed serious injuries keep playing. considering how ineffective he has been, why wasn't he rested a long time ago?

He has only missed two games over the last three seasons, and one of those was when Hartley benched him after showing up late for practice after the Super Bowl.
It reminds me of Iggy, when he'd skip practices and preseason games, even parts of training camp, but then play all 82 games during the season.
Hopefully, whatever the problem is gets fixed and it doesn't become lingering.

I'm going to laugh when we go on a win streak. Book it. I remember the 90's.
Might as well sign Iginla for a few games too. Why the hell not? He's a better option than Troy mumblefeet Brouwer at this point.
I'm barely kidding.

Every team in the league has players playing with significant injuries...every time a team is eliminated you get the laundry list

There might actually be something to this. Not eligible for the playoffs (moot point), but if he's skating maybe do it just to see what he has? Stick him on the second PP unit and see what happens. At worst, he retires in a Flames jersey.

Signing iggy for the remainder of the season would make me want to watch the games and it would drive ticket sales. At the end of the day it is the business of entertainment and that would be entertaining.

Per Gulutzan, Monahan has been playing through two “significant injuries”. He’ll see medical staff later today to determine his playing status for the rest of the year. #Flames

Facepalm.
We finally get Gaudreau-Bennett and we sabatoge with Lazar.
Gaudreau.
Bennett.
Ferland.
Seriously.
We've been asking for this since they destroyed 2014 All Stars as a line.
Not Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland.
Not Gaudreau-Bennett-Lazar.
Not Versteeg-Bennett-Ferland.

I know right? I mean, how can someone not know that? It's completely mind-bottling.
