Otis Redding's song sitting on the dock of the bay, reached number 1 on the billboard charts

This to me is still one of the greatest and coolest songs ever

Within 3 days of recording this song Redding was dead, killed in a airplane crash, and this became the first sound to reach number one posthumously.

I heard somewhere that the whistling wasn't supposed to be on the song, but Redding commonly whistled as filler until he came up with lyrics.
since he died, the song went out as it was.

any truth to that?

Yeah, I'd heard about the whistling thing with Redding.

I love that song.

Yes, Michael Enright did a story on it:

This may be similar to fuzz's link but I can't watch it due to my lack of a Canadian IP address and being too lazy to use tunnelbear or other tools.

"I mean, I got this call on a Monday, and of course Otis' plane went down on a Sunday morning," Cropper told NPR back in 2000. "And they said, 'Get that thing finished and get it to us.' So, I went to work on it. And probably the music is the only thing that kept me going."
