Icon37 Garrioch: Flames interested in Zack Smith

http://ottawasun.com/sports/hockey/n...in-second-half

Quote:
There has been no shortage of trade talk surrounding the Senators with the club 10 points out of the final wild-card spot heading into Monday night.

The likes of Mike Hoffman, Zack Smith, Derick Brassard, Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Johnny Oduya and Cody Ceci have all been mentioned as possibilities to get dealt before the trade deadline Feb. 26th at 3 p.m. EST.

Smith, who is believed to have drawn interest from the Calgary Flames, said the players aren’t distracted by the discussions, but know they’re going to hear their names more and more until the deadline passes.

Of course, if the Senators can get on a roll, then general manager Pierre Dorion, who started scouting meetings in Florida Monday, might not be so quick to make changes and could shift his approach.

“You hear it on the news a lot, but there hasn’t been any talk around the room,” said Smith. “It’s something you can’t really worry about. It’s beyond your control.

“As you approach the deadline, in Canada anyway, you can’t turn on the TV without hearing rumours. It’s never easy hearing your name, but one way to solve that is to start winning a lot more games and then maybe you’re not worried about being traded as much.”

He's having a tough year but who isn't on that team. I could see a guy like Smith fitting in around here.

We just got over the whole F.Hamilton / D.Hamilton thing and now we'll have Z.Smith / M.Smith?

No thank you

Why? Doesn't seem to be an immediate area of need.

Honestly we already have enough players like Z Smith on this team... plus he’s a natural Center and a left hand shot. Pass on him IMO.

$3.25 million for 3 more years for a 29 year old.

He doesnt fit into the top 9 so he'd be an overpayed 4th liner.

Let's not give up assets for a player like this please.

I expect the team to re-sign Backlund, and for Dube to be 4LC next season so yeah not sure I see the fit either.

Smith was apparently a favourite of Dave Cameron, getting top 6 minutes and pp time when he was Sens coach.

I think Smith also played wing on Ottawas top line for a while

This is going to sound sarcastic but I genuinely don't know - how did that work out for him?

I knew the Sens were bad on the PP with Cameron, just wasn't sure if Smith was the only saving grace or something.

I would also be concerned if the Flames are listening to Cameron's take on players, for the PP he runs, that he isn't likely to be removed from running that particular aspect any time soon and thats troubling.

I suppose it could be a sign they aren't close to signing Backlund and are prepared to move on.

I'm hoping if the flames make a move, it's not a big splash but instead adding a fast and gritty and right handed (or any 2 of 3 of these) winger who can go up or down the line up.

Smith doesn't meet those requirements, but glad to hear that they are looking at the less obvious.

Only want this is it’s Lazar or Stajan going the other way. Which makes no sense. Don’t see the fit

I'd actually be a fan of acquiring Zack Smith assuming Ottawa retains a significant amount of salary. He has breakaway speed and is a threat to score on the PK.

If the Flames are spending assets and making moves to acquire players because they're familiar with Dave freaking Cameron, then I strongly question Treliving's level of loyalty.

Only way I see this would make any sense for the Flames is if Brouwer or Stajan are going back the other way, but why would anybody want Brouwer and/or Stajan?

Also, Zack Smith does not have breakaway speed. He's a very average skater.

Well maybe he's not a burner, but he's certainly above average. Guy has 9 short handed goals in his last 2 full seasons. We could use the type of guy who can actually get breakaways because Johnny is the only one who can do that for us right now.

I could see a single draft pick or decent young player on the farm getting the trade done.
