Pita Grill hands down. The one in Riverbend is simply fantastic.

I don't mind cedars deli, but my favorite was babylon qithara in Eau Claire. I haven't eaten there in 4+ years though, so it might not be as good as it used to be.

I stumbled across Mediterranean Express up off 32nd one day when I was up there. It was actually really, really good.

Living in Okotoks I'm also pretty partial to Almiras. I used to live in Marda Loop and Little Lebanon is a close second.

For a split second I didn't look at the date of the first post, and so I thought in the span of about 15 minutes you hustled down to Trung Nguyen and devoured a sub.

You're saying this like that's a problem.

I'm not shawarma expert but I've eaten at Jerusalem Shawarma Royal Oak several times and I like it better than Cedars Deli.

I was diagnosed with celiac disease in November 2016 but I am so grateful that before that, I was able to try the duck sub at Trung Nguyen. I will never forget it.

I missed that I really miss the Vietnamese subs and shawarma, and donairs...

They should call it the depressing food disease.

Re celiac: Bring your own bread and ask them to make the sub on it.

I love thi thi. Great bread; great bread to meat to veggie ratio. Great meats. Blows every other place out of the water. Ps am Vietnamese and eat a lot of viet subs. I am intrigued by this duck sub, will have to give it a try.

For donair, I'm not a fan of the topping to pita ratio of Jimmy's. I'm really liking blowers and Grafton lately. A bit fancier and pricier, but great that comes in 4 different mediums: donair sandwich, donair pizza, donair nachos, and donair Caesar (drink).

The cross contamination at a sandwich place would make it a no go, and on top of that, no gluten free bun comes close to a normal one. They are envelopes of disappointment.

Beruit Street Food cooks their meat on rotisseries over charcoal - makes a big difference to the taste.

All this talk about the duck sub had me venturing there today. It was delicious, so much so, I ordered a 2nd one to bring home.

I had a quick talk with the owners of Trung Nguyen and like some have already pointed out, they’re the only Vietnamese place in town that offers a duck sub. Originally they tried curry duck and Sate duck but nobody was interested and the owners were pretty much eating the leftovers themselves. Since they own a Chinese restaurant too, one of their chefs suggested roasted duck since they were roasting ducks anyways but the owner didn’t think it would appeal to broader Canadian tastes. They tried anyways and to their surprise, each small batch sold out each day. Now, they won’t even think of taking it off the menu.

They’re a nice mom and pop shop and were very accommodating. Try their duck sub if you haven’t already

Ahh the delusional hope I've had so many times of "I'm going to order a second one and eat it tonight"

Actually that means I'm eating it as soon as I get back to my desk at work and suffering all afternoon.

Went to Trung Nguyen today after work. So delicious. The duck and the beef. Owner was really friendly, and proactive about allergies concerns and such. Preferred the beef over the duck though. The toasted bread is definitely the star in that sub. Have to see if we can buy the bread from the baker.

They also make their pita bread fresh when you order. Makes a huge difference. Unfortunately, I found their food a tad too salty. Next time I'm in Calgary, I'd be willing to give them another chance since I like what they're doing. I'd like to think they were having an off day when I went.
