It's obvious Ken King isn't the man to lead this project. This arena deal has been bubbling for what ten years now? Should have stepped down when the loud thud bellowed out as CalgaryNext hit the floor almost two years ago.

I hope that this announcement is as serious as CalgaryNext was.

The Flames could be playing in a new building, right now, today, if that's what the owners wanted.

The 10 year wait since they first floated the idea, the painful theatre of King's bluster, and the endless squabbling between the team and city hall are happening for one reason and one reason only. Because billionaires want to save themselves some money. They'd rather the infrastructure for their private business cost them 1 per cent of their net worth rather than 1.5 per cent. That's all this is about.

The Flames sat around almost a decade "planning" a new arena, then came up with a ludicrous, amateur proposal like some kind of third rate organization from Edmonton. Now that this proposal is rejected, it's time for threats - amateur hour threats, of course, as is the reigning style.

Are the Flames going to forfeit that sweet sweet Rogers TV money to move to America? When does that deal run out, 2026? What was it, 5 billion over 12 years over 7 teams, or around 60 million per team per year? Yeah, they are going to move to Seattle to sell a dozen more suites at a million a pop and get the next Beyonce tour. That sounds like good business. Go for it.

Really, I just want shorter lines to the urinals. Would I pay a ticket tax for shorter bathroom lines? Depends on how many beer I had (but yes, probably yes..only half kidding), but Calgary tax payers shouldn't be on the hook for my beer consumption.
Price tag is because it has the fieldhouse/stadium add-on so the Stamps can get a subsidized facility as well.So it's basically double the cost because of that.

MTS Centre is also the smallest building in the league which drops the price on construction noticeably, but was also built at almost the perfect time in the past 20 years. Construction costs worldwide started shooting up a lot almost immediately after it was built.

No, I'm not. I think it's a good strategy from the ownership standpoint.

Btw, I'm also glad we have another thread to discuss this topic in. We were getting dangerously low on arena threads.

I'm not going to threaten to relocate, except for in the same sentence.

I agree. But his counterpart is not exactly captain maturity either.

I just find it hypocritical that nenshi is apparently wanting to explore an olympic bid which is far less profitable for a city than an NHL team, has a shorter impact in terms of prestige than a successful pro-sports team does and costs more than a new arena does, and on top of all that if the bid went through we would need a new arena anyways. Nenshi is a loud mouth who continues to walk with a "my way or the highway" swagger. Public funding is going to this project regardless, get off your high horse and work together on getting a deal that works for both parties instead of spouting off to the media that the project is dead.

The poster's argument was that Nenshi was "looking out for the financial well being of Calgary"

Clearly it is not.

Not really new information. Of course they'll leave if a new arena doesn't get built. if I was them I wouldn't pay anymore than 450M. Anything more than that is a terrible investment.

Balzac or Airdrie would be unreal. Plenty of land. In ten years it's be a population center as well

If you honestly believe these two things are comparable in scale in any way whatsoever, I feel bad for you.

And that's ignoring the fact that this thing was commissioned before he was even mayor.

Your example is awful.

edit: sorry, he was mayor, but still doesn't like it, example still awful

If the relocation goes as smoothly as the CalgaryNext proposal, it'll be fun to watch, from a Calgary perspective.
Is it wrong, that i'm actually rooting for a relocation? I envision Benny Hill music in the background.
Then maybe we can embrace an ownership group who can appreciate the fans and market that is Calgary.

Blue ring was commissioned before Nenshi was elected. He called it awful too.

I'm not talking about maturity, Nenshi can be a bit of a blowhard but he's good for Calgary and Calgarians. Ken King has bumbled this arena project for almost a decade now. Arena threads started popping up on Calgarypuck about 10 years ago and even the biggest detractors would never have guessed the Flames couldn't work out a location for the damn project yet.

King hired Burke as President of Hockey Operations to focus on this project full time, and nothing has happened. It's a debacle of epic proportions. Geez, at least Daryl Katz had the balls to actual visit Seattle, King sits back like a child saying he's been baited into it. What a joke.
