Default Mexico Earthquake

A magnitude 8.0 earthquake has struck off the coast of Mexico. The shaking was felt in Mexico City. Tsunami Warnings have been issued for the coast.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-41197831

Quote:
The epicentre was about 100km (62 miles) south-west of the town of Pijijiapan and at a depth of 35km, the United States Geological Survey said.

A tsunami warning has been issued for Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama and Honduras.

The quake was felt in Mexico City, with buildings shaking and people running into the street.

One visitor to the city, Luis Carlos Briceno, told Reuters: "I had never been anywhere where the earth moved so much."

I served my mission in Oaxaca, Mexico. Served a while down the coast, so I have been told by a few friends already of the tsunami warnings down in Central America. Praying that they'll be alright.

Honestly, what the heck is happening to the world right now?

Sure seems that way. I feel very fortunate to live in Calgary and not near the coast. Feels fairly safe here.

I hope everyone stays safe and the tsunami isn't too destructive. What is this part of the coast like? Is it mountainous and less populated? I hope so.

remember when some of the TV evangelists kept saying the disasters are gods way of showing displeasure for the acceptance of gays?

maybe god changed his mind and he's now showing displeasure for trumps existence as the head of a government.

I arrived in Christchurch the night of the 7.8 earthquake back in November and had to flee my area on foot with no phone signal or internet connection when the tsunami warning was on. It was surreal and frightening. Sucks to be in. Sure there are a lot of frightened people in Mexico right now. I hope it works out well for them.

Well, that USGS thing is interesting. 39% chance of there being 100-1000 fatalities from this one and 30% of it being higher than that?

The city is built on basically a lake bed, so it's not too stable to begin with. Combine that with a high population density and it could be dire.

My wife was a baby at the time of the 1985 earthquake and was retrieved from rubble from a collapsed building at the time in Mexico City. Today is the 33 year anniversary of that quake. Needless to say that this earthquake and the one from a week ago gave her parents who are still living there crazy flashbacks. My wife's mom texted her to say she was driving when the earthquake hit. This one's a pretty bad one, in a more populated area. Earthquakes are no joke and it's one of those things I never hope to live through.

I get your line of thinking but all the glass is still in the building and the vehicles are rocking in the foreground. My feeling is it is legit
