That is amazing. I had no idea Hirsch had those problems.

Good for him for fighting through it.

Fantastic article. If Corey helped even 1 person by doing this article, it's worth it. One one of the best PT ever.

As someone who has OCD and super similar experiences as far as the dark thoughts as Hirsch explained this article was beautiful. It's so hard for people who don't have the illness to understand. For me it happened during my first year of Univeristy and I went the whole year confused and scared of why I kept on visualizing and constantly thinking about these dark thoughts. I was and still am a very happy go lucky person so these thoughts were so scary and uncharacteristic for me. It got to a point where I was crying myself to sleep every night while being so confused on why I couldn't stop thinking these scary thoughts about harming myself. There was one day that I managed to get to class (which I had been skipping because of my illness) and these thoughts were just rushing threw my head and I just ran out of the room. I had a full on panic attack, I had many of them but this one was the worst. I was as pale as a ghost and at this point I was very close to doing the acts my brain was constantly repeating over and over in my head. It's here where I realized I needed help and found an incredible psychologist on campus and got on the correct medication. Now i'm in my 4th year and hopefully will graduate by next semester! I still have to deal with OCD everyday but with the right help and counseling I'm able to live again! Coming out and talking about your experiences with mental illnesses is so incredibly hard because there always will be people who just don't understand. Amazing article by Corey! Takes a lot of courage to discuss such personal problems, much respect. Hopefully we will continue getting rid of the taboo that mental illnesses still have!

pretty amazing to look back at his career now knowing this.
Many times I thought he was just mentally weak and a career backup at best. little did we know how tough he was being.

I'll be damned, I knew Corey when he was with the Canucks, and now it finally comes together why he did the things he did.

Wow, awesome that he opened this up to everyone.

My stepson played with him for a year, so I've always been a fan of his. Good to see he's enjoying life after going through some hell.

Wow, this might actually be the best article they've done yet... required reading.

A very powerful article and one of the best that I have ever read. Having dealt with mental illness for parts of my life i can appreciate the thoughts of wanting to end it all and the feeling there is no hope. The will to live is very strong and in the end he fought hard to get away from that dark place when it would have been so easy to just give up.

An article like that will go along ways to eliminating the negitive stigma that is often asscoiated with mental illness. Hopefully more people will reach out to those suffering and offer their support and kindness. Knowing someone cares can mean the world to someone who feels totaly alone.

I don't know if it sounds weird or not, but I always look forward to these kinds of articles. It's how I learned about how devastating concussions and post-concussion syndrome can be, and how disruptive it is to their lives.

And I'll admit to being one of those less informed folk regarding OCD, being under the initial impression that it was a serious issue around cleanliness and perfection (thanks to watching Glee). It's insiders who write about this kind of stuff that open my eyes to the facts and figures.

Strange. I don't like reading at all and a lot of the other 'must read' player tribunes I'll just skim over, but this one I read word for word and it didn't feel long at all.

wow... that was an incredibly raw and brave article by Hirsch...

I mean you 'think' you know what OCD is, but clearly I didn't have a clue... so glad he wrote the article; a fella at work has some form of mental illness and while everyone is supportive, its hard to really understand what he is going through... Hirsch's article provides some more insight...

Always wondered why Hirsch never became the 'star' in the NHL that everyone was expecting....Now I understand he was fighting much larger demons than NHLers

glad to hear he is doing better.

Great article. Powerful story and very brave of him to open up like this. Hope this goes a long way to helping others.

Have to wonder how much a goalies mental illness could go undiagnosed because they are so damn weird/strange in general. No offence to any goalies out there.
