Another SNDL seller here. I got in early less than $1.00 and sold this morning.

Taking my gains but leaving original investment in just incase the momentum really carries it.

Holding some other silly ones just for fun NAKD and IPNX

Just sold my SNDL at $2.55. A little lower than i had hoped considering where it started this morning but still up big from where I bought in.

I'm holding my weed ETF's even with today's dip. Long-term hold, even with dramatic undulations this morning. Stocks are so volatile, but the industry really rides waves as one unlike tech or pharm. Been burned cashing out too early and also waiting too long. Not doing that again.

IPO buying always strikes me as a mug's game (for retail investors). Such an uneven playing field that it's not even worth competing in.

Is it possible for the average person to ever make a good return on IPOs?

Of course there is if you hold the stock and do some research. If you expect to make money the day of IPO then probably not. Have you seen the prices GOOG, AMZN, MSFT, etc IPO'd at?

You make money by investing not trading (I'm sure people make money trading as well but you know what I'm saying).

Other good recent examples are Lightspeed and Lemonade

But I think OP's point holds merit though - if you bought a month after IPO you would be better off more often then not. If the point is investing and not day trading.

Some stats that I have seen suggest that you should wait 6 months after IPOs. For the ones that skyrocket, obviously it is best to be from day one. But they are rare, and on average, you are better off waiting.

But that is for long term investing. IPOs tend to be volatile for the first few days, so if you want to trade, that is a different conversation.

Here's the thing about IPOs...

Who is buying? new investors

Who is selling? current management and original ownership

Is that a fair fight? Who knows more about the company and its prospects going forward?

(note: the purpose of IPOs is supposed to be to raise funds for new opportunities for the company - and when that is the case, great! However, more often than not, IPOs take place so that the founders can cash out.)

I made away with a 2% gain today. Was looking to buy back at closing but it never hit my price. The swings were pretty neat to see today - if I were a trader I'd have been all over it.

CCIV popped...up 12% pre market

Quote:
Churchill Capital IV Corp - Trading higher in the premarket following a SEC filing out aftermarket yesterday suggesting the majority ownership of the SPAC has changed hands to a consortium group consisting of Magnetar Financial LLC, Magnetar Capital Partners LP and Supernova Management LLC. Magnetar Capital made a $250m dollar investment into Lucid Energy back in 2017, the SEC filing at very least suggests some sort of announcement could be coming.

I thought Magnetar sounded familiar. They are the charming folks from back in the 2008 CDO debacle.

If Lucid owners are getting shares in CCIV its got to be pretty close to a done deal, hence the jump.
