Great clip of a heated conversation between Ruff and Fitzgerald this morning that was caught in the office of a local bar in Jersey, Bada Bing

Dawson Mercer must be a one hell of a hockey player.

To me, NJ only makes the call to fire Ruff now if they feel they still have a chance to make something out of this season. I'd be stunned if they didn't take another pass at Markstrom here. It makes absolutely no sense for them to wait.

I was thinking the other way.

Tried to make a trade for goalie but no luck.

So fired coach instead.

Bang on take scorp, here’s a live look at Conroys desk right now.

Firing the coach is just standard operating procedure, avg coach lifespan is ~2.5 years, it deserves zero credit, it's only notable if your team isn't willing to do it over money. Then you're a "mickey mouse" org at Arizona levels of buffoonery.
Funny because NJ was the original "Mickey Mouse team" according to Gretzky.

You almost got the right reaction move, NJ.

Almost.

I said they kept the wrong guy. They had one good year with him at the helm and it just happened to coincide with Brunette running the offence last year. Not shocking at all, Ruff has been a crappy coach for years now.

It's been a bit understated as well how big of a loss losing Dougie Hamilton has been for the Devils. I barely hear it mentioned. Dougie is a VERY solid defenceman who also gets a bit underrated on CP given he's an ex-Flame. Really big part of their breakout, transition and PP.

Yeah, that guy is a top-10 defenceman when healthy. Dougie’s absence has been massive.

No question about it. I don't understand how anyone could conclude that this signifies throwing in the towel on the season.

The only thing is the guy who was fired isn't the one who failed to make the deal for Markstrom. So while I agree with you, I'm not sure if it makes a Markstrom deal more likely. Unless Ruff was somehow an impediment to doing the deal. Fitz may double down on not needing to.

It may be a hail mary from Fitzgerald to try and show he didnt need to make a big splash in net and that it was all the coaches fault (which it never is).

If they get a big bounce, he probably saves his job (if it even is in danger that is)

Wow, this is getting ridiculous for this firing. I thought Ruff was doing a pretty darn good job with the Devils until they got into all those injuries. Can they just send us what Conroy is asking for to give them Markstrom and just get this trade done and over with?

Yeah, that was more or less what I was trying to say.

Edit - Kypreos is also saying he's heard that there are 2 factions in Jersey. One he calls the "analytical group" and the other group, where the analytical group is suggesting that the Devils can be good without Markstrom vs the GM and the other side who are pushing for Markstrom.
Kypreos shouldn't be too analytical at this point in time. Do this after the Flames and Devils have finalized that deal FFS! So, who cares what he says - just get that damn deal done!

Holtz was in Ruff's doghouse, wonder how it effects the Markstrom trade if that's still happening knowing that Holtz will get some actual play time now and maybe blossom.

Depends on if Green try to make him have a heart attack in practice first?
