He wasn't traded.

And the Canuck goalie coach wants his players to use pads with white edges, so these wouldn't be from Vancouver.

The new set looks slick. Has a nice downward angle of the pattern on the front of the legs to match the jersey design also. That's going to look amazing come game day.

Cool tidbit, thanks for sharing that.
I can see the logic of white pads looking bigger.

I know the season is way too young to put any kind of stock into something like this, buuuuut I'm gonna do it anyway...

Markstrom's last three seasons in Vancouver, when he was widely regarded as one of the best in the game:

60 GP, 2.71 GAA, .912 S%, 2 SO
60 GP, 2.77 GAA, .912 S%, 1 SO
43 GP, 2.75 GAA, .918 S%, 2 SO

So far in Calgary:
6 GP, 2.19 GAA, .929 S%, 2 SO

I keep catching myself saying "So this is what having a legitimate
top tier goaltender is like, it has been so long since kipper."

Jacob 'Jesus Christ' Markstrom.

Can't wait until he gets his own "freakin'" thread.

Good news on Markstom ... He is a top-level goalie as advertised and expected ... when he plays Vancouver

4-2-0 .935 Sv %

against the rest of the teams:

4-5-2 .889 Sv % 8 out of 11 games with a sv% less than .900

Bad News Only 4 more games left with Vancouver and no chance of playing Vancouver in the playoffs.

What is the Flames problem with Goalies?

The general thought that since Kipper retired was that the Goalies let the team down... maybe the Flames are a hard team to be a successful goalie.

Will Sutter fix this?

If you actually watched the games you'd realize that Markstrom is not the problem. Has he had some average games, yes. But I would say him and Tanev have been our MVPs so far.

Some of the goals on Markstrom have been so unlucky this year. Think of the first goal against Ottawa on Sunday off the toe or the second goal Edmonton scored which he was about to save but Backlund made a desperation play at the puck and deflected it in right by his glove. Hell, look at the 2 on 0 goal Ottawa scored on Sunday and he miraculously caught a massive part of that puck but then it appeared to go bar down off his pad. Didn't he go 3 or 4 games without a clean shot beating him to begin the year? All tips and flukes...

The other thing is that Ward badly mismanaged him and played him to the point of injury and beyond. Don't think Sutter will be that stupid or coach so fearfully.

And...

He's way better on Thursdays and Saturdays then the other days of the week!
He's way better in games where the Flames give up 30 or more shots!

And ...

Did some digging on the Canucks thing, it's deeper than that.

He's way better against teams that play in a primary colour of blue than he his against teams that wear orange or black. He's pretty good at playing red teams too.

I was going to look into zodiac signs of each team too but ran out of time.

Sarcasm aside his numbers aren't great .. both goalies are in the red when it comes to gsaa.

Tkachuk mentioned "protecting the goalies better" yesterday, so maybe Sutter is on to it.

Ricardo's post is of course ridiculous, but I also think this is a really bad read.

Markstrom played five games in thirteen days to start the season before Rittich received his first start on 28 Jan. Rittich was awful. He then started on the tail-end of the team's first back-to-back the following week, and was once again awful. In a situation like this, the coach has two options and neither of them are good: he either continues to play his top goalie and increase the risk of injury or fatigue, or he keeps throwing his backup into games and risk compiling losses while he figures out his game. LaBarbara and Ward went with the former, Rittich worked out his kinks in practice, and did not start again for the next 17 days.

I have no issue at all with how the goalies have been handled.

Luck is not just bad, it comes in other flavours.

Markstrom also had his butt saved by Valimaki as a result of his puck handling adventure

I like Markstrom, he has been good. Looked impossible to beat in his early season outings. Looks hard to beat a lot of the time. And he has had some nights where he has been fighting it.

Statistically, his more recent outings have pulled him down and overall he has been average. But the team has been hurting themselves with turnovers and passive play.

I expect that we see a step change in stats of both goalies under Sutter as they clean up the d zone play.

Yeah, the big break distorts how much Markstrom got played. And Rittich being bad in his initial starts didn’t help. Besides, I don’t think Rittich got hurt from overwork. I think he was hurt against Vancouver on one of the plays out of the net.
