I'm not so sure. He's always had a bit of a hunched over skating style. It obviously works fine for him now, but once he loses a step or two he will be shadow of what we see today, imo. The question is will that be when he's 32, 36, or 38? He'll be fine for the first few years I'm assuming, but he won't be this good at all at 38, if not a lot sooner.

As much as I would have loved to see these two leave Edmonton, it is nice to know there are still star players that want to play in small markets within Canada.

Hopefully Calgary can have the same luck in the future.

Oldest team in the league, no prospects, about to commit nearly their entire cap to a few players havent won in their prime but their 30s with less help will work

This is a higher percentage of the cap than the Toews and Kane third contracts were when they were signed. A McDavid extension will almost-certainly be even higher next year.

Chicago didn't win a single playoff series while the Toews and Kane contracts were active.

I'd like to give my heartfelt congratulations to all those Oiler prospects who will be getting out of Edmonton early because the Oilers won't be able to afford their 2nd/3rd contracts.

Lets hope this is the Toews / Kane scenario, with the key difference being Toews & Kane won multiple times before signing their retirement contracts. Chicago steadily went downhill afterwards. Do it Bowman!

I think it once again just highlights the key is locking them up early if you want to stay in Canada.

Draisaitl has been treated very well by Edmonton.

He got 8 x $8.5M at a time when people thought it was an overpayment, and then he end up out performing that contract.

And now a year out from UFA the Oilers offered him the biggest 8 year contract in NHL history, the largest AAV in NHL history, and the second biggest ever in terms of total $$$ value.

New Arena, Stanley Cup Finalist, and huge contract. Really not that much of a reason to leave, and if he really wants to he can just ask for a trade in the future.

The kicker though is unlike Florida/Tampa where players will take a discount to stay, in Canada it appears you have to always pay market value or overpay early, which makes it tougher to build a winner. Oilers are going to be able to keep some of these guys, but as of yet it hasn't guaranteed a winner.

I wish he left. I was assured he was leaving. I don’t like him and he’s annoying. This means McDavid is staying too. Lame.

Part of the Flames issue was luck, but Tre's mismanagement of the Gaudreau and Tkachuk contracts also played a role.

Tre could have re-signed Gaudreau long-term the year before his last year and chose not to. And he royally screwed up the Tkachuk situation by not offering him a long-term second contract.

The bottom line is Tre tried to get too cute on the contracts to his stars and got burned. He made some great trades for the Flames, but I'm not sorry the guy is gone.

Likely more than that as I think this means McDavid is getting $16 million per year over 8 years at a minimum if he stays and Bouchard's not taking less than Nurse unless they can somehow get him to take a bridge deal. So that's already at 50 million for those 4 alone. And while Skinner isn't a franchise goalie or anything, you have to assume if the Oilers continue being a winning regular season team and he puts up decent numbers and wins, he'll probably get at least $6 million per season as well.

Unfortunately, it was always going to be that way. I always thought that either of the big 2 leaving was a pipedream. It was always destiny they were going to stay and hopium to think they wanted out of Edmonton ASAP. Money talks so will be interesting to see what McD gets.

Sucks as a Flames fan to see, but it is what it is.

So they got no discount here. He got paid just like we said all along.

You also can't blame him for accepting the deal, there is zero guarantee this type of money would have been available in free agency, he could have been injured during the season.

He can also always ask for a trade later on as well.

Yep its a 5.5M raise when they already struggle with the cap

Would have rather seen him walk for nothing as a UFA but I'll take this overpaid contract. I don't think it indicates McDavid is staying, it shows Draisatl knew he wasn't gonna get paid the same by another team so he took his payday. Edmonton paid him because they think it means McDavid will stay. McDavid helped his best bud get paid, and then gets to go choose his destination and get another payday as well.

Next year they are already at something like $78 million cap hit now, and Bouchard needs his new contract. Takes them to $88 million, so $4 million to fill out the depth.

Then in 2026/2027 they have this..
McDavid - $16
Draisatl - $14
Bouchard - $10
Nurse - $9.5
Hyman - $5.5
Nuge - $5.125

Total - $60.5 million or 63% of a $96 million Cap. With 2 more players signed for $2.45 million, leaving $33 million to sign 2 goalies, 5 defenseman, and 8 forwards. *Edit - forgot Cambell buyout, take $2.6 off so $30.4 million

This is way better than them trading him for a haul

I have to say that I'm a little surprised he signed.
I just can't imagine not even testing the market and getting to choose where to play/live, when the option is so close.

So much for that 8 year 80 million dollar deal with 80 million in deferred future salary that folks were afraid of.

This is his for his age 30 to 37 years do will see how it plays out. The Oilers are trying to win now so by the time he's 35, it likely doesn't matter how this contract looks.

I suspect he will make near the annual max for the first couple years.

Had a peek at hfoil. Almost no posts. I guess they are working on justifications

We also said probably a 15-16 AAV on the open market if someone was aggressive, so he basically got that deal the 8th year just brown the AAV down by 2M so they can sign someone wants to join up to chase the dream.

Bouchard is coming in at 10M, I hope he puts up 80 plus points this year.

This contract will become a boat anchor by the end of year 3, at the latest. He is 34 when the second half of this contract begins.
