Let’s talk about swim lessons
Are any even available for kids right now?

Where we live, lessons are happening but the parent has to be in the water with the child. Up to 12 years old I think. Seems a little silly to me but I guess it cuts down on contact with the instructor?

I think I got through Level Blue.
...or White. Which one was higher?

White I’m pretty sure. But I’m not an expert, I washed out around red/maroon.

We've got our little guy (13mos) going through swim kids right now.
Which is basically survival swimming for kids of any age.
As far as regular swim lessons go. Not too sure.

Yeah Grey for me. I remember we used to revere those who reached Bronze Medallion.
15 minutes treading water? Oh that’s too easy, lets do it for an hour. Like, who are these people?

I remember getting Grey but my parents figured I could swim so I didn't need to go further. My older sister got the white badge, but my book remained incomplete. Not sure I've ever really gotten over it.

I'm pretty sure Repsol Sports Centre is running swim lessons at the moment.

Yeah Bronze Cross was harder again. I did all the way to NL, National Lifeguard. They used to push you to exhaustion levels. Necessary, but unpleasant. That level of fitness is a distant memory, unfortunately. That being said, technique allows you to tread water for hours, not pure stamina.
Teach your kids to swim to the highest level they can. The number of lives lost to water related accidents is still tragically high, especially amongst children.

I'm too old to remember what level I finished at.

I only had one colour left when they switched to numbers. But then the conversion left me 2 or 3 number levels left. I felt like they changed the deal and stopped.

We are doing private lessons right now for our son which are 1 on 1 and done at a hotel pool. I don't know all the details as my wife is handling it.

My parents tossed me in the lake and I'm still here so I passed.
Lessons are going on now but the parent has to be in the water because the instructor isn't supposed to touch your kid. Unless it's one on one lessons

At what age did people start their kids in formal swim lessons? I take my son to the pool almost every week and I enjoy the bonding time. He's coming up on 2 now which I think is still too young for formal lessons, but maybe I'm off there?

I'm told I should have been born a fish, not a 2-legger. Got pretty far in the badges... over the last few decades the badges and levels keep changing based on shape, color, animal, or whatever. So confusing.
Swimming IMO should be considered one of those vital "Life Skills" since EVERYONE eventually has an encounter with water. Sadly it doesn't take much water depth for someone to panic and drown, whether that water is stagnant (ie pool) or flowing. Even with good swim lessons and skills, swimming in oceans is yet another skill. As I say to my kidlets, ALWAYS respect the water and ALWAYS be wary of turning your back on waves.

I'm pretty sure that before the colour system the levels were distinguished names like "novice" and "survival" and the like sort. Does anyone remember this?
