Just going on history, I expect the Flames to use their first rounder on a D-man. Not knowing much about the prospects, what D-men would be available for us? I have been watching the german kid, Seider, but it seems like he will be gone.

What other D-Men would be around at 26?

Soderstrom, Harley, Bjornfoot, Heinola. Further down Kokkonen. It's actually a thinner 1st for D men I think. You got 2 or 3 in the top half.

Started watching more on Heinola. I think he might be the kind of player Treliving covets. Smooth skating D-man that excels in all zones.

Tre has stocked up on D-men in the past, and its paid dividends. Having a young core stocked there at all times is mandatory, and if there are too many, d-men have a higher trade value than forwards.

If Seider isn't there (Who I assume would be Tre's top choice), I expect Heinola to be the selection.

Soderstrom , Kokkonen and Bjorfoot are all about the same as Heinola. Smaller puck handling skater types.

Philip Tomasino is still the guy I want. His offensive upside paired with the fact that he is a right shot makes him a good fit for the Flames. They need some prospects that are legitimate offensive threats.

Yea, RHS's are a significant need of the Flames.
I'd be looking all high upside RHS's on the forward end of things.

Seems like a lot of similar prospects in that 20-50 range. I'm hoping we figure out a way to draft twice in that range. Trade down for another pick or add another 2nd as part of a trade would be ideal. Not unreasonable to see Anderson and Dube equivalents out of it.

McKenzie's final rankings are up:
1. Hughes
2. Kakko
3. Byram
4. Turcotte
5. Dach
6. Cozens
7. Zegras
8. Podkolzin
9. Caufield
10. Krebs
11. Boldy
12. Knight
13. Newhook
14. Söderström
15. Seider
16. Broberg
17. Harley
18. York
19. Lavoie
20. Suzuki
21. Kaliyev
22. Tomasino
23. Heinola
24. Poulin
25. Robertson
26. Brink
27. Björnfot
28. McMichael
29. Vlasic
30. Thomson
31. Pelletier

Some interesting tidbits from the show:
Knight is the highest goalie ranked since 2010 at 12. McKenzie calls him a franchise goalie and the big question is when a team will jump in and take him.

Kayliev is the biggest wildcard in the draft according to McKenzie. One scout had him ranked as high as 7 another had him at 45.

That's the highest I have seen Knight ranked. I wonder if Edmonton looks at taking him as they do have an organizational need.

Starting to feel like Knight won't be there when we pick. I think Colorado will take him at 16.

Brink or Tomasino please.

Yup Francis just said on the radio he asked Treliving about Knight and Treliving told him that he doesn't expect Knight to be available when they pick.

It's a good draft for the Flames pick. I'd trade down if you could land a couple of 2nds. Ottawa, Carolina and I think the rangers all have multiple 2nds.

I'm loving that Lavoie, Kaliyev, and Tomasino are ranked close to where we pick. Knight is still my clear cut desire for this draft, outside of the top prospects like Kakko, and Hughes, and Byram, etc, but landing him seems like a pipedream at this point. Do we have what it takes to move up and grab him? Would a Brodie/Frolik + #26 + mid level prospect?

That's too much to move up in my opinion- especially for a goalie.

i'm a little gun shy with drafting goalies in the first to be honest... Knight may very well be a great goalie but the Flames haven't had any success in developing a guy since Vernon (GS Guigure not withstanding as i think the Ducks did most of that)

The thing that isn't mentioned when they say that Knight is the highest ranked goalie since 2010, is that that goalie is Jack Campbell. Campbell is just now getting to the NHL full-time 8 years later and with a different organization.

Campbell and Knight put up almost identical numbers in their draft years.

Knight may turn out, I just think it is way too risky to be taking a goalie in the 1st round let alone to move up to draft a goalie.

Fleury is the only goalie drafted in the 1st round to lead his team to a Cup in the last 10 years.

I'm really getting excited for the draft. I think this years is going to be a lot of fun. A lot of lists being busted perhaps including Bobby Mack's. Hes usually bang on in the top half but after say 15 or 16, I think the gloves are off.

If they're going to move up to pick someone I hope it's about 10 spots and I hope it's Broberg. Price will be something you can swallow and you can never have enough high-end defense prospects, especially if Brodie is on his way out. Gio can't play forever. Flames have one of the best defensive cores in the league, why stop now.
