I'm going to save money and do something myself. I have no idea how to do it. Can you guys tell me how? I won't pay you because I'm doing it myself.

Yet another shout out to Klassen Tax Services.

Locke was kind enough to come on site, and process 11 returns for our staff. That tells you the quality of his work, if that many people here are using him.

Don't be a cheap-ass and use H & R Block.

Use H & R Locke.

That's like the "hey guys, I'm saving money and doing our renovations myself, can everyone who knows trades make it out to help on weekends A, B and C? There'll be FREE beer and food!" guy.

lol, those were some funny replies...

Not sure how you can fault someone for trying to learn something new...

I believe that information is meant to be shared.

My tax situation is relatively simple which is why I'm looking to save some money this year. Not sure why attempts to save money always seem to be frowned upon...

You did come to a thread of someone offering services in exchange for money, that's probably why you got some replies.

Also, you are not asking anything specific that people can answer. "Hey guys, looking to do my taxes any advice would be great" doesn't really work for taxes, answers can vary depending on your situation.

My advice, download studio tax and see if you can do it and if not hire someone.

Fair enough, my bad, a google search led me directly to this thread; I did not manually click the Buy & Sell category to get to this thread which is why I thought it was a general information thread.

So...anyhow...filing has begun. A few observations thus far:

- If you havent set yourself up for Direct Deposit with CRA there are a number of ways to go about it, but its really easy for your Accountant to do so have that information handy before you see them.

- Do not assume that CRA has your T-slips on file already. Its handy that they do it, but it is far from a fool-proof system, especially if you were working for a smaller employer or going to school.

- If you've changed your name or address thats a good thing to start with when talking to your accountant. It seems minor but it can be a major PITA at the wrong time.

Any good tax deductions this year? I am kind of disappointed about the transit passes getting un-deductable.

Actually this tax season we are seeing the full implementation of the tax policy of the last Liberal budget, so there are many fewer things to look out for.

Gone are: The Universal Child Care Benefit, Fitness and Arts credits for Kids, the Child Tax Credit, Transit Pass credits and Textbook and Education tax credits.

So.....Medical Marijuana is there. Thats new. I advise my clients to keep their receipts for everything including apparatus.

Quick question:

I was layed off this past year and on my T4 the "employment income" box does not have all the severance money in it. Just about 25% of it. Should it all be there? should I look into this?

Look down at the bottom of the T4, there should be a Box 67. Thats the Non-Eligible Retiring Allowance box, thats fancy Government speak for 'Severance.'

Box 14 and Box 67 added together should be your Employment income and Severance for the year.

Thanks for that I see that now. I’m still trying to figure out why I owe so much in taxes because based on my pay slips the tax should be roughly what I should have owed on some basic calculations. Turbo tax is claiming I owe $7000 additional lol.

I think I’ll just fire all my stuff to my brother who is a tax cpa and have him deal with it.

If your brother is a tax professional and is willing to do your taxes then why are you mucking about with Turbotax?

There will be a tax.

If you thought your normal taxes were high, wait until you see the 'Locke's last minute Tax.'

You're going to have to bring more than top-shelf Scotch and Mao.

I don’t like to put people out haha. Especially if it’s something I can do myself.

This does not sound like you can do it yourself.

Slava if you're going to go all-out, I have a mid 90's, OG #7 Eric Cantona jersey, that I can fashion you in for the evening.

I've always wondered what it would be like to see a Liverpool fan kick Eric Cantona in the face and this might be the closest I'll ever get!
