In related news, Calgary's chances of getting the Amazon HQ2 increased to 18/1 and Edmonton's stayed at 100/1, according to Paddy Power.

^ personally, I did not see anything in that article that was overly surprising (other than perhaps amazon making an effort to not build a bunch of employee cafeterias and forcing employees out tot eh 'hood).

I am sure that whatever region wins the rights to host HQ2, the win will come at a cost, and it will be hard to reconcile the whole deal.

Edmonton has offered Amazon use of the 18,347 workstations at Rogers Place. Each one will come with it's own pair of sweatpants and good shoes.

I hope, at minimum, we make some sort of shortlist. That would help open up other tech companies' eyes to Calgary if Amazon is shown to have given it serious consideration.

According to the article above, the odds are 18-1, which puts Calgary in the top 12. Still a long shot, but above a snowballs chance.

From the article.

"The odds are made by Irish betting company Paddy Power, which is known for taking bets on unusual events."

Should point out, this has nothing to do with anything coming from Amazon. This has to do with betting odds established by an external entity with no insight or knowledge of the decision making of Amazon.

Per Vegas the Oilers were the Stanley Cup favourite this year. So...

Only because so many delusional fans in Edmonton put money on them to win the cup. Vegas doesn't make odds based on actual sports data, it's purely a numbers game. The more money being bet on an outcome, the better the odds get

Neither would Paddy Power on something like this. Probably some betting went on Calgary so they lower the odds and hope others see this as some sort of good sign and see more money on Calgary.

I'll never forgive Paddy Power for ruining that poor fat goaltender's career by taking bets on whether he'd eat a pie live on air.

For shame Paddy Power, for shame!

An English soccer player who enjoyed a meat pie on the sideline during a game was forced to resign on Tuesday after his meal spurred a formal investigation into gambling. The strange tale involves a Cinderella team, a bookmaker eager for publicity and, most important, a portly, middle-aged goalkeeper with a taste for meat and potatoes.

When Sutton United, a small team from the fifth tier of English soccer, met mighty Arsenal in an F.A. Cup fifth-round match on Monday, there was naturally a lot of attention on the game. One of the Sutton players who was singled out for pregame press was Wayne Shaw, as much for his girth as for his talent.

It appears that it wasnt Paddy Power but another British betting site.

That's my point,

Odds Are a prediction of future betting patterns rather than the real odds so inferring anything from the CBC story is wrong.

This is quite true, and I probably shouldn't have mentioned betting odds. But I would still say Calgary has a better chance than most of the applicants, and should probably be in the top 20. I guess it depends how you define 'a snowball's chance'. I would say a place like Halifax or Edmonton fits that description better than Calgary.

Anyone here actually place a bet with Paddy Power on this?

I don't think 18:1 is good enough odds to bet on. If Calgary was in the US then we'd be better than that but the odds of announcing the HQ leaving the states while Trump is in power challenging their postal subsidies has got to 100:1 or worse on its own.

I think as a city we'd be a top 5 option. But the fact we are in camada tanks it.

You'd think Amazon would stagger their staff start/end times to cover a 12 hour period. That would keep the whole area lively for much longer and ease congestion everywhere including transit. Local businesses would thrive and be better able to service the needs of Amazon employees. By the time the last breakfast crowd came through they'd be ready for the first lunch crowd, etc. It's not like their business only caters to the 9-5 EST market, it's worldwide in every time zone.
