If a guy that hasn't done much in a decade warrants $5 million what does a GM that's actually assembled a good team warrant? At least as much I would think.
I guess they figure if Kris Russell is worth $4M then a guy that actually can impact the team is worth more.

I think the argument from the other team would be “hahaha, yes but he went to Edmonton. So are you good with $2 mil?”

I'm really not sure how Ken Holland is the man to fix the water in Edmonton.

I'm sure it's already been mentioned, but I didn't realize how bad some of his Wings contracts are. Frans Nielsen at 5.25m (+ modified NTC) until he's 38, that's madness. Darren Helm at almost 4m until he's 34, Justin Abdelkader at over 4m until he's 36.

him and the Oilers are a match made in heaven. Living in the past and no idea how to manage the salary cap.

You missed it man.

"Paying the Old Guard."

Classic Oilers. Kris Russel must be thrilled!

Hard to judge a GM without knowing the 'marching orders' (- Jay Feaster) from ownership.

40 year old Johan Franzen will still have a $4m cap hit in 2020, despite not having played hockey since 2015, and that makes me very happy.

Here's looking for more of that generosity from Mr Holland.

Dave Tippett is a senior advisor for the new Seattle team. Pretty sweet gig to be on the ground floor of a start-up organization. Why on earth would he jump into the Oilers tire fire?

Money?

I guess that trails off into that whole argument of if you consider Jews to be "white". Anyway, it could screw his career and legacy but 25m would be awfully nice for retirement. Oilers really didn't make a good choice for their situation here. They're firmly locked into Jay's patented "cap jail" so they hire a guy whose weakness is working with the cap. We're talking like Chia weak.

He's not on their cap. He's LTIR.

Default Ken Holland is the new GM and POHO of the Edmonton Oilers

Did you miss the press conference? Daryl Katz was abundantly clear about what he expects to happen: Holland has been hired to supplement the already awesome core of elite Oilers players, and instill a culture of winning that results in multiple Stanley Cups.

Holland was not brought to Edmonton to rebuild. The expectation is that he will tinker on the edges to create a team that will win now.

I also think you can judge Feaster even with what we know about ownership orders.

It has been speculated that Tippett wants to get back in rather than wait another a couple full season. He has already been out of it for a couple.

I think it will be very different this time. Really. Finally the GM can turn the franchise around.

Absolutely.

And, if like Holland, he decides to sewer something already promised for potential greatness... he'll join the canaries in the coal mine that are piling up. Not only is the roster bad, he's a pretty bad coach to get the most out of McDavid IMO. I heard the same about Hitch, and I think they were right. He himself only survives mud-slinging by being the "fine, I guess I'll help out" option to finish the season.

Holland is also leaving what I would imagine would have been a pretty cushy gig to finish his days in Detroit. So they could be planting a few "Enter at own risk" signs this year if they lure a good coach with dump truck of money and promises of greatness
